Taeyang of Big Bang Returns with ‘Quintessence’: First Solo Album in Nine Years Ahead of Group’s 20th Anniversary
K-pop icon Taeyang, a prominent member of the legendary group Big Bang, marks a pivotal year in his career with the release of his highly anticipated first solo studio album in nearly a decade. Titled “Quintessence,” the release arrives as the legendary group prepares to celebrate its momentous 20th anniversary, making 2026 a landmark period for the artist.
Kicking off 2026 with Big Bang’s impactful appearance at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in Indio in April, Taeyang released his fourth studio album, “Quintessence,” on May 18th, a date that also happens to be his birthday. Returning to the music scene after a hiatus, both as a Big Bang member and a solo artist, Taeyang revealed he dedicated nearly a year to developing the album, meticulously balancing his familiar artistic identity with the pursuit of new creative challenges.
“Quintessence”: Exploring Core Identity and Artistic Evolution
“With this year being Big Bang’s 20th anniversary, my primary focus when embarking on this album project was to discover what truly resonated as ‘myself’ while simultaneously presenting something novel,” Taeyang shared during a press listening party in Seoul on Monday. He reflected on the difficulty of this task, stating, “Over the past two decades, I’ve explored so many different artistic avenues, which made it challenging. I continuously questioned what new endeavors I could undertake at this stage of my career.”
Taeyang explained that the guiding concepts at the project’s inception were “essence” and “quintessence.” These words naturally steered the album’s thematic exploration toward the profound process of searching for one’s authentic core identity. The 10-track album clearly showcases signs of this experimental approach. Moving beyond his previous collaborations primarily with in-house producers at his agency, The Black Label, Taeyang broadened his horizons by working with a diverse array of external producers for this project.
Track-by-Track Highlights and Notable Collaborations
The album’s opening track, “Bad,” was crafted in collaboration with the renowned American production team The Stereotypes. Taeyang characterized “Bad” as a darker, performance-driven song, drawing parallels to earlier solo hits like “Where U At.” He elaborated on its meaning: “The title is ‘Bad,’ but the recurring phrase ‘still bad’ throughout the song signifies that I remain true to myself. While such a phrase might typically sound like bragging, for me, the lyrics encapsulate the journey I’ve traversed, the obstacles I’ve overcome, and the life I’ve wholeheartedly lived.”
The main track of “Quintessence,” titled “Live Fast Die Slow,” stands out as the fastest-tempo song Taeyang has ever released in his illustrious career. This energetic track powerfully conveys his unwavering determination to navigate life at his own deliberate pace, even amidst a rapidly evolving world. “As I wrote the lyrics, I genuinely felt this song best embodies who Taeyang is,” he commented, adding, “During my solo tour two years ago, I realized my next album truly needed a faster, more dynamic song.”

Another track, “Would You,” has garnered significant attention from K-pop enthusiasts due to its featured artists: AllDay Project members Tarzzan and Woochan. Taeyang expressed his inspiration behind the collaboration: “Watching AllDay Project make their debut strongly reminded me of Big Bang’s early days. I believed it would be an excellent opportunity to collaborate, and I sensed their rap verses could infuse the youthful energy and fresh texture that Big Bang once possessed.”
Further enriching the album’s lyrical depth, former The Black Label labelmate Tablo of Epik High contributed as a lyricist for three distinct songs: “Movie,” “Open Up,” and “G.O.A.T.” Interestingly, Taeyang revealed that “Movie” was the only track on “Quintessence” where he did not actively participate in writing the lyrics. “Usually, I approach lyric writing with a specific vision and often make numerous revisions, but Tablo’s lyrics for ‘Movie’ were already perfectly crafted,” he stated. “I proceeded to record it almost immediately, without feeling the need for any alterations.”
The Evolving Definition of “Essence” and Future Plans
Reflecting on the album’s creation process, Taeyang shared a profound realization: that “essence” cannot be confined to a single, simple definition. “When we discuss abstract concepts like freedom or love, they are formed by the convergence of so many diverse elements,” he explained. “I came to understand that what truly matters is the attitude and mindset with which I actively pursue these values. Even if I feel I’ve discovered an answer, it’s not something I can merely articulate or define.”
Concluding the insightful listening party, Taeyang outlined his immediate plans to continue engaging with fans through his solo activities. He then anticipates reuniting with the other Big Bang members later this year to participate in the highly anticipated 20th-anniversary projects for the group, promising an exciting future for both his solo career and Big Bang’s legacy.
