Pioneering the future of display technology, LG Display proudly announced the global debut of its revolutionary third-generation tandem Organic Light-Emitting Diode (OLED) technology at SID Display Week in Los Angeles on Tuesday. This significant unveiling marks LG Display’s strategic expansion into cutting-edge applications for the Artificial Intelligence (AI) era, including advanced automotive, robotics, and various other innovative display solutions.
At the heart of this innovation, the company’s captivating exhibition booth at the Los Angeles Convention Center, themed “OLED Evolution for the AI Era,” showcased these advancements during the annual display industry event, which runs through Thursday.
Visitors explored three distinct zones within the booth, highlighting LG Display’s expertise across large panels, versatile small and medium-sized displays, and specialized automotive applications.
Specifically engineered for demanding automotive displays, the groundbreaking third-generation tandem OLED sets new industry benchmarks. It boasts an exceptional ability to maintain pristine image quality for over 15,000 hours at room temperature, even while delivering a brilliant 1,200 nits of brightness. This advanced technology also achieves remarkable power efficiency, consuming 18 percent less power than its predecessor, and offers more than double the lifespan, reinforcing its superior durability for in-vehicle applications.
At its core, Tandem OLED technology strategically layers multiple light-emitting structures, a design proven to significantly enhance brightness, boost power efficiency, and extend overall display durability. LG Display proudly pioneered the global commercialization of this innovative technology in 2019, further advancing its leadership with the mass production of its second-generation tandem OLED in 2023.
With this latest iteration, LG Display has achieved significant advancements in reducing degradation by optimizing charge movement within the OLED device. Furthermore, the incorporation of a deep blue dopant—a high-energy organic material—elevates color purity and reproduction to unprecedented levels, delivering vivid and accurate visuals.
Expanding its innovative reach, LG Display also unveiled its cutting-edge plastic OLED (P-OLED) technology, specifically tailored for humanoid robots, marking its public debut.
This versatile P-OLED leverages the company’s proven automotive tandem OLED technology, offering unparalleled design flexibility while ensuring robust durability across diverse temperatures and challenging operating environments—ideal for the dynamic world of robotics.
For the ultimate home entertainment experience, LG Display also showcased an advanced OLED TV panel, powered by its groundbreaking Primary RGB Tandem 2.0 technology. This innovation maximizes light efficiency through a sophisticated pixel structure and refined algorithms, setting new standards for premium television displays.
This flagship panel delivers an astonishing peak brightness of 4,500 nits and an ultralow reflectance rate of just 0.3 percent, positioning it among the absolute best in the industry for clarity and visual impact.
This comprehensive new lineup underscores LG Display’s leadership as display-makers globally accelerate efforts to integrate advanced OLED panels into an ever-expanding array of devices, from premium televisions and cutting-edge vehicles to revolutionary robots and sophisticated AI-related hardware.
Reflecting on LG Display’s pioneering spirit, Chief Technology Officer Choi Young-seok stated, “Our unrivaled R&D capabilities have consistently led the world in developing first-of-their-kind and best-in-class OLED innovations. We remain steadfast in our commitment to prioritizing customers and cementing our leadership as a technology-driven company that actively shapes the future of displays.”
