Doosan Corp. announced plans on Wednesday to establish a new copper-clad laminate (CCL) production plant in Thailand, strategically positioned to meet the escalating global demand driven by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers.
The company intends to create a new subsidiary and construct a state-of-the-art manufacturing facility within the Araya Industrial Estate, situated in Bang Bo, Samut Prakan province, Thailand.
This significant investment is estimated at 180 billion won (approximately $121.7 million) and will feature a sprawling facility spanning approximately 73,000 square meters. Construction is slated to commence within this year, with mass production of high-performance CCL targeted for the second half of 2028.
The upcoming Thai facility will specialize in manufacturing advanced, high-performance CCL, a critical component essential for cutting-edge AI infrastructure and sophisticated network equipment, according to Doosan.
CCL, a fundamental material in printed circuit boards (PCBs) used across semiconductor applications, consists of insulating substrates meticulously coated with copper foil on both sides. This component is vital for enabling robust electronic signal transmission in various devices. High-performance CCL variants are particularly indispensable for AI accelerators, where minimizing signal loss and maintaining exceptional stability under high temperatures are paramount for optimal operation.
Global demand for premium CCL is experiencing a rapid surge, directly correlating with substantial worldwide investments in AI data centers as companies actively race to expand their computing capacity for advanced AI applications.
Doosan highlighted that the Araya Industrial Estate was selected due to its exceptional logistical advantages. The strategic location offers convenient access, being approximately a 30-minute drive from Suvarnabhumi International Airport and roughly one hour from Laem Chabang Port, Thailand’s largest deep-sea port.
Furthermore, the company cited the industrial estate’s modern infrastructure and robust disaster response systems as key factors influencing its strategic decision.
Doosan confirmed that decisions regarding any further expansion of the facility will be dynamically influenced by evolving market demand.
“We have strategically decided to expand our production capacity to respond in a timely and efficient manner to the growing global demand for high-performance CCL,” a company official stated. “Further investments will be reviewed flexibly to align with market dynamics.”
