Hyundai Motor Group is set to invest approximately 8 trillion won (equivalent to $5.43 billion USD) into the construction of a groundbreaking research and business complex in southern Seoul. This strategic investment aims to centralize the conglomerate’s diverse research capabilities and significantly accelerate its ambitious foray into future mobility technologies.
Dubbed the “HMG Future Complex,” this innovative facility will be strategically located near Bokjeong Station on Subway Line No. 8 in Songpa-gu, southern Seoul. Its core mission will be to spearhead advanced research and development across critical future business sectors, including cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) and software development.
This ambitious project benefits from the strong backing of Hyundai Motor Group’s key affiliates, including Hyundai Motor Company, Kia, Hyundai Mobis, Hyundai Steel, and Hyundai Rotem.
According to comprehensive regulatory filings, Hyundai Motor Company is slated to invest 2.89 trillion won, securing a 36.1 percent stake in the new entity. Kia follows with a 2.36 trillion won investment for a 29.5 percent share, while Hyundai Mobis contributes 1.09 trillion won for 13.7 percent. Hyundai Steel’s investment stands at 516.4 billion won for 6.5 percent, and Hyundai Rotem will invest 460.8 billion won for a 5.8 percent stake.
The total projected investment for the entire project is expected to reach 8 trillion won, with potential for further contributions from additional participating affiliates.
Construction of the state-of-the-art HMG Future Complex is scheduled to commence in the first half of this year, targeting completion by the end of 2030.
This significant initiative underscores Hyundai’s broader strategic push to reorganize and optimize its global research and development (R&D) framework. By consolidating teams currently dispersed across various facilities, such as the Namyang and Uiwang R&D centers in Gyeonggi Province, the group aims to achieve unparalleled efficiency. Centralizing R&D, testing, and management functions is expected to foster stronger collaboration across its crucial future mobility businesses, encompassing electrification, advanced software-defined vehicles (SDVs), and pioneering artificial intelligence applications.
Industry experts anticipate that the new HMG Future Complex will become home to pivotal divisions, including Hyundai’s Advanced Vehicle Platform unit and the autonomous driving technology firm 42dot, alongside a robust contingent of engineers specializing in AI and software development.
The complex’s prime location, approximately a 15-minute drive from Hyundai’s upcoming Global Business Complex headquarters in Seoul’s vibrant Gangnam district, is also identified as a significant strategic advantage for attracting and retaining top-tier talent in the competitive technology landscape.
