Hanwha Aerospace, a leading South Korean defense company, announced Wednesday it has signed a significant agreement with US defense major Northrop Grumman to jointly develop a cutting-edge long-range missile system. This strategic collaboration underscores Hanwha Aerospace’s accelerated expansion into the lucrative US defense market.

The landmark agreement was formalized on Tuesday at Sea Air Space 2026, a premier defense exhibition held in National Harbor, Maryland, drawing significant industry attention.

Under the terms of the agreement, the two defense industry giants will closely cooperate on the crucial development of the first-stage solid-fuel rocket motor for Northrop Grumman’s Advanced Reactive Strike, or AReS, missile system.

The AReS system is envisioned as a highly mobile, surface-launched long-range missile designed to deliver rapid strike capabilities, demanding an exceptionally high-performance propulsion system for optimal operational efficiency.

Hanwha Aerospace has confirmed its active participation from the critical early stages of development for this missile’s first-stage rocket motor, leveraging its proven expertise.

Hanwha Aerospace aims to fully leverage its extensive production capacity and advanced manufacturing technologies to significantly accelerate both the development timeline and future mass production efforts. The ambitious goal for both companies is to successfully demonstrate the jointly developed system by 2027.

This pivotal partnership further solidifies Hanwha’s strategic efforts to significantly expand its footprint in the US, the world’s largest defense market. Concurrently, the company is actively pursuing opportunities, including the US Army’s vital self-propelled howitzer modernization program.

Reflecting its broader strategy, Hanwha Aerospace has recently been broadening its collaborative initiatives with major US defense contractors, aiming to deepen its stronghold in both the American market and other key allied defense sectors.

A Hanwha Aerospace official stated, “This strategic partnership will undeniably strengthen our technological prowess and manufacturing capabilities as we vigorously pursue entry into the competitive US defense market.”

A Northrop Grumman official emphasized, “In an environment where aerial and maritime threats are evolving with unprecedented rapidity, the development of advanced weapon systems that ensure decisive dominance for the US and its allies is paramount. We are committed to collaborating with Hanwha Aerospace to deliver innovative, effective, and cost-efficient defense solutions.”
