HD Hyundai has announced a significant stride in its global expansion, signing a pivotal Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in New Delhi. This agreement, forged with NSHIP TN and Sagarmala Finance Corp., establishes a robust framework for developing crucial infrastructure and forming a joint venture dedicated to a new shipbuilding project in India.
Integral to this initiative, NSHIP TN, a special-purpose vehicle spearheaded by the V.O. Chidambaranar Port Authority under the Indian central government, will oversee the implementation of supportive policies and incentives vital for the project’s success within India’s dynamic maritime sector.
This latest collaboration builds upon HD Hyundai’s prior engagements, including an initial memorandum with the state of Tamil Nadu in December for new shipyard development. Further cementing this strategic direction, Executive Chairman Chung Ki-sun held high-level discussions on potential cooperation with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the Global Energy Leaders Roundtable in January, significantly laying the groundwork for this deeper industrial partnership.
Under the terms of this landmark agreement, HD Hyundai will establish a dedicated joint-venture shipbuilding company alongside its Indian partners. Funded through a specialized shipbuilding investment fund, HD Hyundai will assume the crucial role of the largest shareholder, directing and overseeing all operational aspects of the new venture.
The Indian government is demonstrating strong commitment to the project’s early phase. Initial shipbuilding orders are slated for HD Hyundai’s existing domestic yards, preceding the new venture’s launch. Furthermore, a comprehensive training program will see local Indian workers sent to Korea to acquire essential shipbuilding expertise. These skilled personnel will then play a key role in establishing and operating the new Indian shipyard, guaranteeing a seamless and efficient rollout.
Looking ahead, HD Hyundai is committed to developing a cutting-edge digital shipyard in India. This will involve significant investment in industry-academia cooperation and the deployment of advanced automation and AI-based technologies. The goal is to dramatically enhance competitiveness across all facets of design, production, and operational processes for future-proof shipbuilding solutions.
To ensure long-term sustainability and foster local economic growth, HD Hyundai will also establish a dedicated training center. This facility will be crucial for nurturing local talent and, concurrently, supporting the integration of Korean suppliers into the Indian market, thereby creating a stable, robust, and localized supply chain for the new shipbuilding hub.
A company official underscored the significance of the deal, stating, “This agreement fundamentally shifts bilateral shipbuilding cooperation from planning into a concrete implementation stage. Our strategic entry into the dynamic Indian market is set to unlock substantial opportunities, enabling us to secure significant new orders, innovate and develop novel business models, and considerably expand overseas prospects for our domestic suppliers.”
