LG Energy Solution: AI Boosts Productivity 50%

LG Energy Solution: AI Boosts Productivity 50%
LG Energy Solution CEO Kim Dong-myung (LG Energy Solution)

LG Energy Solution, a leading South Korean battery manufacturer, has announced an ambitious goal to enhance its overall productivity by 50% by 2028. This significant objective will be achieved through a comprehensive artificial intelligence (AI) transformation initiative, as revealed by CEO Kim Dong-myung on Monday.

This revised target represents a substantial increase from LG Energy Solution’s previous aim of a 30% productivity improvement by 2030. The company stated its decision to accelerate its AI strategy is a direct response to intensifying competition, with rivals rapidly investing in AI technologies and establishing specialized AI divisions.

In a powerful message to employees, CEO Kim Dong-myung underscored the critical importance of AI-driven transformation, describing it as an “essential task directly tied to the company’s survival” within the dynamic global battery market.

These strategic declarations come as South Korea’s prominent battery manufacturers navigate a challenging market landscape, characterized by a deceleration in electric vehicle (EV) demand and heightened competition from Chinese counterparts.

Kim characterized the current global battery market as a “tilted playing field,” where competitors are engaged in fierce battles, often supported by significant government backing and extensive human resources.

Acknowledging the limitations of traditional approaches, Kim stated, “It is difficult to expect meaningful chances of victory by responding with simple quantitative competition.” He emphasized, “Through AI-driven transformation, we need to redefine the rules of the game, focusing on our core assets and exceptional talents.”

Kim highlighted LG Energy Solution’s formidable strengths, including an extensive intellectual property (IP) portfolio, nearly three decades of pioneering industry experience, and a highly skilled workforce. He asserted that integrating these core assets with advanced AI technologies would unlock powerful synergies, fundamentally reshaping the competitive environment.

To facilitate this ambitious plan, the company is committed to establishing a robust support system, ensuring the successful and widespread adoption of AI solutions throughout its entire organization.

Furthermore, LG Energy Solution will launch an “AI Governance Committee,” personally chaired by the CEO on a monthly basis. This committee will be responsible for overseeing the strategic introduction of AI solutions and meticulously reviewing all pertinent issues, including security protocols and change management strategies.

The company also intends to progressively implement an enterprise AI platform in various business sectors, excluding those directly involving nationally strategic technologies. Concurrently, it will expand comprehensive AI education programs for all employees, fostering a culture of innovation and digital literacy.

Addressing potential concerns, CEO Kim also firmly dismissed notions that the broader integration of AI would pose a threat to job security within the company.

He drew an analogy, stating, “Even with a calculator, one must understand the principles of calculation to utilize it effectively.” Kim elaborated, “Similarly, individuals with the critical experience to define and structure problems will demonstrate superior proficiency in leveraging AI capabilities.”

Kim underscored that LG Energy Solution’s AI transformation is designed not to diminish the importance of employees, but rather to empower them. The initiative aims to shift employees’ focus towards “real work” that generates significant business impact, thereby reducing time spent on inefficient tasks and fostering higher-value contributions.
