BTS Makes History: First Group in Over a Decade to Dominate Billboard 200 for Three Weeks with ‘Arirang’ as Global Momentum Soars
K-pop sensation BTS has made history, firmly securing the coveted No. 1 position on the Billboard 200 chart for an impressive third consecutive week with their latest album, “Arirang.” This remarkable achievement marks them as the first group in over a decade to maintain the top spot for such an extended period.
Billboard’s chart preview data, released on Monday, confirmed the K-pop group’s fifth studio album, “Arirang,” continues its chart-topping dominance, extending its reign at the summit to three weeks on the April 18 chart. Billboard consistently provides these preview insights earlier in the week, ahead of the official charts being dated for the upcoming Saturday.
This monumental accomplishment by BTS marks the first instance in over ten years that any group has spent three consecutive weeks at No. 1 on the highly competitive albums chart. The last band to achieve this prolonged chart dominance was Mumford & Sons in 2012, whose album “Babel” held the top position for an astounding five weeks.
Furthermore, BTS solidifies its legacy as the sole Korean act ever to maintain the coveted top spot on the Billboard 200 for three consecutive weeks, writing a new chapter in K-pop history.
The prestigious Billboard 200 chart meticulously ranks albums by calculating total equivalent units. This comprehensive metric integrates various consumption formats, including pure physical and digital album sales, streaming activity ingeniously converted into album units, and individual track downloads also converted into album units.
This week, “Arirang” demonstrated its impressive performance by recording a robust 124,000 equivalent album units. A significant portion, 71,000 units, stemmed from pure album sales, propelling the album to the No. 1 position on Billboard’s Top Album Sales chart for a remarkable third consecutive week. Streaming equivalent units contributed 50,000 to the total, with track equivalent units adding 3,000.
Since its blockbuster debut, the “Arirang” album has consistently maintained formidable momentum. In its opening week alone, “Arirang” achieved an astounding 532,000 in pure sales — a record-breaking weekly total for any group album since Billboard commenced separately reporting units back in December 2014.
The international success of “Arirang” extends far beyond the United States. The album has commanded the No. 1 spot for three consecutive weeks on Spotify’s Weekly Top Albums chart (April 3-9), triumphantly reclaimed the apex position on Germany’s Official Top 100 Albums chart on April 10, and consistently ranks high across numerous other major global markets. It achieved the No. 2 position on France’s SNEP albums chart and Australia’s ARIA Top 50 Albums, concurrently securing No. 2 and No. 3 on Japan’s Oricon weekly digital and combined album charts, respectively.
Meanwhile, “Swim,” a popular track from BTS’s latest album, remained a strong performer, holding the No. 2 spot on Billboard’s main singles chart, a slight dip from its previous peak.
BTS’s monumental global success is also fueling unprecedented demand for their live performances. The group recently captivated a combined audience of 132,000 devoted fans across their concerts held on April 9, 11, and 12 at Goyang Stadium in Gyeonggi Province, demonstrating their immense drawing power.
Following these triumphant domestic dates, the K-pop superstars are set to head to Tokyo, continuing their massive world tour that will span across North America, Europe, South America, and Asia. This ambitious tour schedule encompasses 34 cities and a staggering total of 85 shows — establishing it as the largest number of performances ever undertaken on a single tour by a K-pop act.
