Samsung Electronics has relaunched sales of its highly anticipated, ultra-premium Galaxy Z Tri-Fold in the US, a move many industry experts believe signals the device’s likely final release as an experimental concept.
This groundbreaking $2,899 foldable smartphone saw a fresh restock on Thursday, becoming available again via Samsung’s official online store and select partner retailers. This marks the first new supply in approximately two months, following earlier limited batches that quickly sold out within minutes, highlighting immense consumer demand.
However, this current restock could potentially be the last opportunity for consumers to purchase the innovative Galaxy Z Tri-Fold. Samsung has already ceased sales in various global markets, including its home country of South Korea, and has not provided any details regarding future production runs. This scarcity reflects the significant challenges associated with the device’s intricate and complex manufacturing process.
Indeed, the device’s extreme scarcity has only intensified its allure and consumer demand. The Galaxy Z Tri-Fold stands out with its unique dual-hinge design, allowing it to unfold into an impressive, nearly 10-inch dynamic display – blurring the lines between a premium smartphone and a compact tablet. Beyond its revolutionary form factor, it boasts top-tier flagship specifications, including a powerful 200-megapixel main camera and Samsung’s cutting-edge Galaxy AI capabilities, offering an unparalleled user experience.
From its inception, the Galaxy Z Tri-Fold was never engineered for widespread mass production. Industry analysts estimate its domestic sales were strictly capped at approximately 10,000 units, with overall global output believed to be limited to a mere 20,000 to 30,000 units, firmly establishing its status as a collector’s item.
Samsung has openly admitted that the Tri-Fold’s exceptionally intricate hinge mechanism and premium, high-cost components significantly constrained profit margins. Furthermore, low production yields made large-scale manufacturing economically unviable and technically challenging. Consequently, the Galaxy Z Tri-Fold has primarily served as a powerful showcase of Samsung’s advanced technological prowess and innovation, rather than a mainstream commercial offering.
During the device’s much-anticipated unveiling event in December, Lim Sung-taek, Vice President and Head of Samsung Electronics Korea, emphasized the careful consideration behind its premium price point, stating that the $2,899 figure was “a figure we arrived at only after cutting and cutting again,” underscoring its inherent value and advanced engineering.
