Trump Tariffs Alert Korean Appliance Makers

The Trump administration has enacted a sweeping 25 percent tariff on finished goods containing significant quantities of steel, aluminum, and copper. This measure has prompted South Korea’s leading home appliance manufacturers to urgently assess the potential repercussions for their US market operations.

Major industry players, including Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics, are currently conducting thorough reviews of the new tariff regulations. While initial assessments by industry sources suggest only limited short-term disruption, deeper concerns about long-term profitability and market demand persist.

This latest tariff imposition follows previous measures introduced last June, which were based on steel content. Despite those earlier tariffs, Korean appliance makers successfully expanded their market share in the US, demonstrating resilience in a challenging trade environment.

This track record provides some optimism that the immediate impact of this revised tariff scheme on Korean brands’ competitiveness in the US market may be contained.

However, concerns regarding profitability remain a significant issue. An industry expert, who requested anonymity, highlighted that the home appliance sector typically operates on thin, single-digit profit margins. Such slim margins leave very little room for companies to absorb additional cost burdens imposed by these tariffs.

“Should tariff-related costs continue to escalate, the overall profitability for these businesses is highly likely to deteriorate,” the source cautioned.

Industry sources confirmed on Friday that the Trump administration signed a proclamation the previous day, formalizing the imposition of a uniform 25 percent tariff on finished derivative products that incorporate steel, aluminum, and copper. This new policy represents a shift from previous tariff calculations.

Previously, duties were determined by the proportion of metal content, sometimes reaching as high as 50 percent. The new system simplifies this by applying a flat 25 percent rate to the total price of the product, regardless of the precise metal composition.

This significant trade measure is scheduled to take effect promptly at 12:01 a.m. on Monday.

Following the official announcement, both Samsung and LG immediately initiated internal assessments to gauge the full scope of potential impacts on their crucial export volumes to the US market.

Some market observers suggest that Korean brands might maintain relative competitiveness. This outlook is based on the expectation that any resulting price increases will likely be reflected broadly across the entire market, affecting all manufacturers, not just imports.

“Following last year’s tariff implementations, both LG and Samsung adjusted their prices upwards. However, US domestic manufacturers also raised their prices to comparable levels,” another industry source explained. “Considering that US-made appliances frequently rely heavily on imported raw materials themselves, Korean firms actually saw an increase in their market share in the US. Therefore, the negative impact on competitiveness this time around may prove to be limited.”

The more substantial risk, however, lies in potential shifts in consumer demand. If persistent, tariff-driven price hikes continue throughout the home appliance industry, these elevated retail prices could ultimately dampen demand within the US market, consequently affecting overall export volumes from Korea.

“Sustained price increases across the market could inevitably lead to weaker consumer demand over an extended period,” a source noted. “We are diligently monitoring the potential for a mid- to long-term slowdown in the US appliance market.”
