The Posco 1% Foundation, the nonprofit arm of Posco Group, is launching “Classrooms for Growth Together,” a project focused on remodeling classrooms for students with special needs to create improved learning environments.
This initiative will target special education classrooms at elementary schools in Pohang (North Gyeongsang Province), Gwangyang (South Jeolla Province), and Seoul – regions where Posco maintains significant business operations.
Since its inception in 2013, the foundation has amassed 116 billion won ($76.3 million) in donations, which has allowed it to consistently expand its portfolio of impactful social contribution programs.
The “Classrooms for Growth Together” initiative will renovate classrooms to prioritize safety and accessibility. Planned improvements encompass non-slip flooring installation, removal of door thresholds to facilitate easier movement, and installation of shock-absorbing cushioning. Furthermore, lounge areas will be reimagined using low-stimulation colors specifically chosen to benefit hypersensitive students.
The Posco 1% Foundation will also provide customized educational resources designed to address various disabilities, with the ultimate goal of increasing student engagement and reducing the burden on educators. Examples of these resources include wheelchairs for students with physical limitations, reading magnifiers for the visually impaired, and augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) devices for students with developmental disorders.
“This project represents more than just a basic renovation. Our aim is to foster an environment in which students with special needs can learn and develop with dignity,” stated a Posco official.
“In alignment with the government’s commitment to strengthening public education, we will continue to support environments that allow both students and teachers to dedicate their full attention to learning.”
Applications are being accepted until the end of the month through the Posco 1% Foundation website. Selected schools will be chosen based on document review and on-site evaluations. Construction is slated to begin during the summer break.
