BTS Unveils “Arirang”: A Mature Sound and Evolving Identity Beyond K-Pop

BTS’ highly anticipated new album, “Arirang,” dropped Friday at 1 p.m., offering a revealing glimpse into the group’s current artistic state and exploring a diverse range of emotions and their evolving identity.

Critics have largely lauded the group’s fifth full-length album for its sophisticated craftsmanship, though many have noted a shift towards appealing to a more mature U.S. audience, suggesting a natural progression in their sound.

“The most notable point is that the album seems to target the US adult pop audience,” music critic Lim Hee-yun commented. “BTS is widely known among the American public through songs like ‘Dynamite,’ ‘Butter’ and ‘Permission to Dance,’ which align with what mainstream listeners expect. Those tracks cater to the perception of BTS as a ‘Korean Nsync.’”

However, Lim also emphasized the album’s impressive overall quality and its diverse musical landscape.

“The album has strong depth and variety. While much of it aims at the US mainstream pop market, it also feels like BTS is positioning itself as a serious artist — not just a K-pop act, but a fully realized global musician,” he said.

BTS reportedly dedicated extensive songwriting sessions in Los Angeles last summer to craft “Arirang.” The album also boasts collaborations with Grammy-winning producers, including Diplo, Ryan Tedder, and El Guincho, further elevating its production value and sonic richness.

Grace Kao, a sociology professor at Yale University, echoed this sentiment, suggesting that “Arirang” showcases a more refined and mature facet of the group.

“They are establishing themselves as more than a K-pop boy band. There are echoes of their roots as hip-hop artists, but also many synth-driven tracks reminiscent of 1980s dream pop and psychedelic pop,” Kao said.

She also highlighted a more balanced distribution of vocal and songwriting contributions among the BTS members.

“Jungkook and RM no longer dominate all the songs. There is more presence from J-Hope, with tracks that reflect elements of his solo work,” she said. “Even though Jin has no writing credits, some songs appear to align with his musical style.”

Ultimately, “Arirang” encapsulates BTS’s distinct identity and the cumulative emotions amassed throughout their extraordinary journey. RM played a pivotal role in writing the album’s lyrics, lending an authentic and personal touch to its overarching message.

The main track, “Swim,” a vibrant alternative pop anthem, encourages listeners to navigate life’s challenges with unwavering resilience and an enduring love for life.

Lead track “Body to Body” reflects the group’s strong desire to connect with audiences in a live concert setting, while “Hooligan” chronicles their journey of forging their own path across the global stage. Tracks like “Aliens” and “FYA” radiate ambition and the dynamic energy of the group’s highly anticipated return.

“No. 29” smoothly transitions into the album’s second half, where “Merry Go Round” explores the cyclical nature of existence. “Normal” delves into the spectrum of emotions experienced both on and off stage. “Like Animals” conveys a passionate determination to live life to the fullest, and “They Don’t Know ’Bout Us” boldly asserts a sense of confident self-identity.

Concluding the album, “One More Night” expresses the desire to cherish fleeting moments of bliss, while “Please” captures the yearning to remain united regardless of the prevailing circumstances. The album culminates with “Into the Sun,” a powerful track centered on the unwavering resolve to move forward with courage and optimism.
