Posco Future M has secured a significant 1 trillion won ($668.2 million) contract to supply electric vehicle (EV) battery anode materials to a major global automaker. This landmark deal, announced Monday, marks the largest agreement for the company since entering the anode material business in 2011.
While the identity of the automaker remains undisclosed, the supply agreement spans the years 2027 to 2032 and includes a potential extension contingent upon mutual agreement. This contract builds upon a previously established partnership, complementing a natural graphite anode supply deal signed in October.
Leveraging this strengthened collaboration, Posco Future M is actively pursuing expanded partnerships with the automaker, exploring opportunities in cathode materials and lithium-related ventures.
To fulfill the requirements of this substantial supply contract, Posco Future M is expanding its anode material production capabilities beyond its existing facility in Pohang, North Gyeongsang Province, which currently boasts an annual capacity of 8,000 metric tons.
On March 5th, the company announced a 357 billion won investment dedicated to the construction of a new artificial graphite anode plant in Vietnam. This latest supply agreement secures a key customer for the initial phase of the Vietnam project, with anticipation of further orders to support a subsequent phase of expansion.
According to Posco Future M, the Vietnam project is strategically designed to enhance cost efficiency and boost product competitiveness, facilitating large-scale production capacity and broadening its reach in overseas markets.
Posco Future M is accelerating its global expansion strategy, already supplying anode materials to a diverse clientele, including General Motors and a leading Japanese battery manufacturer, in addition to prominent domestic battery producers.
The company emphasized that “The latest contract highlights Posco Future M’s increasing competitiveness within the battery materials sector, as global industries like electric vehicles and energy storage solutions are increasingly focused on establishing robust and stable supply chains.”
As the sole Korean manufacturer of graphite-based anode materials, Posco Future M has played a crucial role in strengthening the domestic battery supply chain. Since localizing natural graphite anode materials in 2011 and commencing mass production of artificial graphite anodes in Pohang in 2021, the company has actively pursued greater integration across the supply chain, encompassing raw materials, intermediate processing, and final production.
The battery materials provider currently manufactures both natural and artificial graphite anode materials and is at the forefront of developing silicon-based anodes for next-generation battery technologies, including all-solid-state batteries.
