Samsung SDI is set to unveil its cutting-edge battery technology, including solutions for humanoid robots and AI data centers, at InterBattery 2026 in Seoul this week.
Operating under the theme “AI Thinks, Battery Enables,” Samsung SDI will debut a pouch-type all-solid-state battery sample specifically engineered for physical AI applications, such as powering humanoid robots.
This innovative battery is designed to provide high energy density, robust power output, and enhanced safety, all within a compact form factor. It directly addresses the limited installation space within robots, often confined to the chest area, while simultaneously enabling rapid responses to sudden power demands during movement.
While Samsung SDI has primarily concentrated on prismatic all-solid-state batteries for electric vehicles (EVs), the company is now broadening its form factor portfolio to encompass a wider range of applications, including robotics, aviation systems, and advanced wearable devices. Samsung SDI anticipates commencing mass production of its all-solid-state batteries in the latter half of next year.
In addition to robotics solutions, Samsung SDI will showcase battery solutions optimized for AI data center infrastructure. This includes the U8A1 battery, designed for uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, which provides crucial backup power to maintain operations during power outages.
The U8A1 battery utilizes a prismatic form factor and a lithium manganese oxide (LMO) cathode, ensuring high power output and enhanced safety. It also boasts a 33 percent improvement in space efficiency compared to conventional products, allowing data centers to operate more efficiently with fewer battery units, optimizing space utilization.
For battery backup units (BBUs) installed within servers, Samsung SDI will introduce a high-power cylindrical battery. This battery is specifically designed to prevent data loss during power interruptions, ensuring data integrity. Constructed with high-nickel NCA cathode materials, the battery facilitates rapid response to power fluctuations and extends standby time during outages, safeguarding critical data.
Furthermore, Samsung SDI will exhibit its comprehensive range of Samsung Battery Box energy storage system (ESS) solutions, alongside Samsung Battery Intelligence, an AI-driven software platform. This platform analyzes battery health and predicts potential abnormalities using machine learning algorithms trained on operational data from over 1,400 energy storage sites globally, enhancing the reliability and lifespan of battery systems.
Samsung SDI will also present a next-generation prismatic battery featuring an industry-leading energy density of 700 watt-hours per liter. This high energy density battery is designed to enable electric vehicles to achieve a driving range of up to 800 kilometers on a single charge, revolutionizing EV performance.
