Industry insiders warn rushed promotion, poor execution risk denting K-pop’s reputation overseas
G-Dragon’s first official performance in the Middle East ended in disappointment Tuesday. The “Krazy Super Concert” in Dubai was marred by what attendees and industry insiders describe as inexperienced event management, raising concerns about the impact on K-pop’s reputation.
The concert, held at Dubai Media City Amphitheater in the United Arab Emirates, was a highly anticipated event for fans of the K-pop icon. However, critics argue that hasty promotion and questionable planning by organizer Pu1se Events diminished the show’s overall success.
A local promoter, speaking anonymously, pointed to the rushed timeline as the primary cause of the issues.
“The announcement of ‘Krazy Super Concert’ in Dubai occurred less than a month before the event. What’s worse, it fell on the first day of Ramadan,” the promoter stated. “The artist lineup felt disjointed. The venue seems more appropriate for rock bands like The Rose or Day6, rather than a large-scale K-pop concert. Scheduling it on a Tuesday, a weekday, instead of a weekend was also a misstep.”
Unlike typical K-pop concerts featuring multiple idol groups, this Dubai event heavily focused on G-Dragon and Jay Park. Chinese artist Kun made a special guest appearance. Kim Jong-kook, signed under the same Galaxy Corporation as G-Dragon, and former girl group members Yerin and Yein were also included in the lineup.
Numerous attendees expressed their dissatisfaction on the concert’s official social media channels. VIP ticket holders, who paid extra for early access, reported being denied entry until approximately 10 minutes before the show commenced, negating a key benefit they were promised.
This Dubai concert follows a previous problematic K-pop event in the UAE in November. “Dream Concert Abu Dhabi,” organized by Theory Eleven Entertainment in partnership with Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism and Miral, drew criticism for operational failures, including last-minute lineup changes and unmet VIP promises.
An industry insider believes these incidents reflect a lack of understanding of K-pop fandom culture and poor communication between organizers.
“They didn’t understand the expectations of K-pop fans,” the official explained. “Miscommunication with intermediaries led to an overestimation of the lineup. Some groups weren’t fully present, and even the soundcheck was poorly organized.”
The official further noted that while Pu1se Events has organized events in China, Southeast Asia, and the United States, the G-Dragon concert marked their first venture into the Middle Eastern K-pop scene.
“A local promoter was not involved. Without adequate local knowledge, they made errors in timing and artist selection,” the official stated. “Who schedules a major outdoor concert in Dubai on the first day of Ramadan?”
