K-pop sensation aespa has officially announced their highly anticipated second studio album, ‘Lemonade,’ marking a ‘refreshing’ new chapter in their musical journey. Unveiling the lead track “Lemonade” at a Seoul press conference, the quartet confirmed the album’s release for 1 p.m. Friday, two years after their groundbreaking debut studio album “Armageddon” in May 2024.
Moving beyond their signature “metallic taste,” aespa shared with reporters that this comeback embraces a vibrant “sour taste,” promising fans a blend of their intense energy with a more relaxed and cool vibe on the new album.
The title track, “Lemonade,” stands out with its driving synthesizer bass, a sonic representation of resilience and wit, as explained by the band members.
aespa’s leader, Karina, elaborated on the song’s profound message, stating, “It’s about treating the trials and pain that come your way as lemons and grinding them into a delicious lemonade.” She expressed hopes that listeners would draw significant energy and strength from the track.
The full 10-track ‘Lemonade’ album diversifies aespa’s soundscape, featuring the prereleased hip-hop collaboration “WDA” with K-pop icon G-Dragon, alongside the empowering dance anthem “Shakin’.” Fans can also anticipate the rock-infused “Can’t Help Myself,” the sophisticated hyper-pop sound of “Camouflage,” and the dynamic “Switchblade,” a collaboration with American hip-hop star Ty Dolla Sign.
Significantly advancing aespa’s captivating narrative, ‘Lemonade’ expands the group’s unique fictional universe, rooted in a virtual world. This album delves into the innovative concept of a “crack” manifesting across a multiverse and parallel worlds. Far from being a mere crisis, aespa interprets this “crack” as a powerful medium, unlocking new possibilities within their expansive storyline.
Winter emphasized the album’s role in propelling their universe forward: “This second album takes our unique fictional universe a step further. You’ll feel our familiar intensity, but also a more solid message and direction. We would be grateful if fans feel that aespa has opened yet another new door.”
Reiterating the core message, Karina highlighted that “turning crisis into opportunity” serves as the defining theme for this new chapter of aespa’s journey.
To engage fans globally and bring their expanded universe to life, aespa is launching extensive promotional events. A dedicated pop-up store will operate at Seoul’s IFC Mall in Yeouido from Friday until June 7. Simultaneously, pop-up experiences will open in major international cities like Los Angeles, New York, and Shenzhen, China. The global activation will further extend to over six additional cities, including Bangkok, Tokyo, and Taipei.
