Busan Accommodations Warned on BTS Concert Price Gouging

Busan Accommodations Warned on BTS Concert Price Gouging

Busan’s global image is facing a potential challenge amidst widespread concerns over accommodation price hikes, particularly coinciding with the eagerly awaited BTS concerts. The South Korean President has openly expressed strong reservations, warning that such instances of “price gouging” could severely damage the city’s reputation and its appeal as a prime tourism destination.

The issue gained significant attention after BTS members, including RM, addressed the controversy during an online livestream event. While acknowledging their limited direct influence, they encouraged businesses to “give it a break,” emphasizing the need for fair pricing for their dedicated fanbase. The K-pop supergroup is set to perform in Busan from June 12-13, a period expected to draw a substantial number of fans and tourists.

The President further cautioned that if reports of exorbitant accommodation prices resurface during future large-scale events, it would have detrimental long-term effects on Busan’s standing. He cited various factors harming the tourism sector, including inhospitable practices, price exploitation, and even racial discrimination. He stressed that the actions of a minority of accommodations overcharging visitors could ultimately undermine the entire regional tourism industry.

While recognizing that market demand plays a role in pricing, the President highlighted public frustration stemming from businesses reportedly canceling existing bookings to re-offer rooms at significantly inflated rates. This practice creates an environment of mistrust and unfairness for concert-goers and other visitors seeking to experience Busan.

Amidst this pricing controversy, the local community in Busan has rallied to support visiting fans. Temples, churches, and schools across the city have generously stepped in to offer free or low-cost accommodation options during the BTS concert period, providing much-needed relief and showcasing the spirit of hospitality to K-pop enthusiasts.
