Monsta X Unit Shownu X Hyungwon Returns with Highly Anticipated Album ‘Love Me’
K-pop powerhouse Monsta X’s first unit, Shownu X Hyungwon, is making their long-awaited comeback with the new album, “Love Me.” Formed in 2023, the duo previously established a distinctive identity with their critically acclaimed debut EP, “The Unseen,” showcasing refined music and sophisticated dance that captivated fans worldwide.
The new album, “Love Me,” is set for release on Thursday at 6 p.m. KST, marking the unit’s first project in nearly three years. This return follows a two-year and 10-month hiatus, a period that member Shownu expressed some regret over regarding their dedicated fanbase.
“I feel somewhat sorry to the fans because it took a long time for us to return with an album,” Shownu shared during a recent media interview. “But we prepared diligently, so please enjoy it.”
Exploring the Nuances of Love: The ‘Love Me’ Album Journey
Hyungwon clarified that the delay was strategic, prioritizing full group activities before the youngest Monsta X member, I.M, enlisted in the military. With that milestone passed, the timing felt opportune for the unit’s grand return to the K-pop scene.
The members described “Love Me” as a meticulously crafted project that delves into both the light and shadow aspects of romantic relationships. “We captured the emotions of love that change as time passes,” Shownu noted, promising a deeply resonant listening experience for fans.
The seven-track album features the powerful lead single, “Do You Love Me,” which emotionally portrays the precarious tug-of-war in seeking answers in an uncertain love. Another standout track is the unexpectedly refreshing “Superstitious,” sensuously illustrating the intoxicating moment of falling in love. The album also includes compelling solo tracks: Hyungwon’s “No Air” and Shownu’s “Around & Go.”
Hyungwon explained that his solo track, “No Air,” encapsulates the profound hurt and exhaustion one feels when thoughts of someone become so overwhelming “that you can’t even breathe.” Shownu’s solo piece, “Around & Go,” explores the weariness of being caught in an addictive romance, experiencing constant hurt and manipulation yet struggling to break free from its grasp.
Strategic Choices: Dance Focus and Veteran Charm
The selection of the main track for “Love Me” involved careful deliberation with their agency, Starship Entertainment. While both Shownu and Hyungwon held a strong affinity for “Superstitious,” a track written by Hyungwon, and initially advocated for it to demonstrate a new musical direction, the team ultimately decided on “Do You Love Me” as the lead single.
“The agency suggested that since we had a long hiatus, we should go with what we do best — our dance,” Hyungwon stated. “We agreed with that opinion. As long as people think it’s a good song when they hear it, I’m satisfied.” This decision underscores their commitment to delivering impactful performances, a hallmark of Monsta X.
When asked about navigating the competitive landscape of newer, younger K-pop artists, the duo emphasized their unique advantage: a mature charm honed by extensive experience. “There are many younger artists who are technically excellent, but our unique weapon is an aura that can fill the stage just by standing there,” Shownu proudly highlighted.
Hyungwon concurred, noting that their artistic growth is visibly reflected in their performance style. “In the beginning, we performed with a power level of 100, but now we’ve learned how to pace ourselves and control our strength in our own way,” he added, showcasing their evolution as seasoned performers.
Enduring Bonds and Future Aspirations
Having recently celebrated Monsta X’s 11th anniversary, the members reflected on the group’s enduring bond and their shared journey from their 20s into their 30s. “It feels like if I had real brothers, this is what it would be like. They are definitely closer to me than my parents in some ways,” Shownu remarked, attributing the group’s remarkable longevity to a combination of luck, individual effort, the diverse personalities within Monsta X, and the unwavering support from their dedicated fans and Starship Entertainment.
As Shownu X Hyungwon move forward with the release of “Love Me,” their goals transcend short-term chart achievements. Instead, they focus on cultivating lasting appeal. “Since our last album was loved for such a long time, our goal is for this new release to be an album that is still loved five years from now,” Shownu concluded, expressing their desire for “Love Me” to become a timeless addition to the K-pop discography.
