This large-scale exhibition showcases approximately 170 of his captivating artworks alongside rare historical archives, including previously undisclosed photos and drawings, offering an unparalleled insight into the artist’s life and legacy.
Coinciding with the 110th anniversary of Yoo Young-kuk’s birth, this special SeMA exhibition unveils new pieces, inviting visitors to delve into lesser-known facets of the art master’s remarkable life and artistic journey. It’s a unique opportunity to explore the depths of his creative spirit.
Breaking from traditional chronological displays, “Yoo Young-kuk: A Mountain Within Me” innovatively begins by immersing visitors in works from 1964, a pivotal year that marked a significant turning point in the painter’s artistic evolution. This unique curatorial approach promises a fresh perspective on his masterful compositions.
Following this introduction, the exhibition meticulously reassembles Yoo Young-kuk’s extraordinary life through four distinct sections. These sections span key stages of his career, from his formative art studies in Tokyo during the 1910-45 Japanese colonial rule, to his unwavering dedication as an artist in his later years, even while enduring health challenges like a pacemaker insertion and major surgeries. It highlights his enduring spirit and commitment to art.
Further enriching the experience, a dedicated section presents a compelling collection of historical artifacts, including personal photographs and news articles. This offers visitors a vital glimpse into Yoo Young-kuk’s life within its broader historical context, connecting his art to the times he lived in.
To fully immerse visitors in Yoo Young-kuk’s artistic world, the exhibition features engaging audio guides. Renowned pianist Son Yeol-eum provides the Korean narration, while TV personality Peter Bint lends his voice for the English version, offering insightful commentary that brings the artworks to life.
As a special highlight, the Seoul Museum of Art will illuminate Yoo Young-kuk’s iconic works across the impressive 222-meter-long facade of the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul.
