Global music sensation BTS has shattered streaming records with their fifth studio album, “Arirang,” accumulating an astounding 739.1 million streams worldwide in its debut week. Released on March 20, this monumental achievement was confirmed by entertainment data tracker Luminate on Wednesday (U.S. time).
This impressive debut solidifies “Arirang” as the highest first-week streaming total for any album released this year. Luminate further noted it’s the largest global streaming performance since Taylor Swift’s “The Life of a Showgirl” achieved 1.3 billion streams in October of the previous year.
Examining the global streaming distribution, the United States spearheaded first-week listens with 115 million. Significantly, Brazil and Mexico followed closely with 78.6 million and 75.9 million streams, respectively. South Korea, the birthplace of K-pop, registered 58.3 million streams, ranking fourth, while Japan secured fifth with 48.2 million. This data strongly highlights the increasing influence of Latin American audiences within the dynamic global K-pop market.
YouTube viewership data mirrored this burgeoning trend. From April 6 to May 3, Brazil and Mexico secured the third and fourth positions for BTS-related video views, with Argentina and Peru also entering the platform’s top 10 markets globally. South Korea, in contrast, placed sixth, further emphasizing the shift towards Latin American engagement.
The K-pop supergroup’s immense popularity across the Latin American region has directly translated into overwhelming concert demand and sold-out shows.
During their “Arirang” world tour stop in Mexico City on May 7, 9-10 (local time), the beloved K-pop septet captivated a combined 150,000 fans over three days. Tickets for these highly anticipated concerts vanished instantly upon release, demonstrating fervent fan loyalty. Beyond the venues, thousands more congregated outside to be part of the vibrant atmosphere; the Los Angeles Times reported approximately 35,000 fans gathering nearby during the second and third show evenings. Adding to their significant diplomatic impact, on May 6, an estimated 50,000 fans thronged Zocalo square as BTS met Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, receiving a commemorative plaque from the government during their talks.
Looking ahead, BTS is scheduled to return to Latin America in October, continuing their record-breaking world tour with stadium concerts across Colombia, Peru, Chile, Argentina, and Brazil. This leg of the tour will mark a historic milestone, as BTS becomes the first Korean act to headline major venues such as Bogota’s Estadio El Campin and Buenos Aires’ Estadio Unico de La Plata. Furthermore, they will be the inaugural K-pop group to hold a standalone concert at Santiago’s Estadio Nacional, underscoring their trailblazing status. Due to overwhelming fan demand, additional shows have already been incorporated into their schedules for Lima, Santiago, and Buenos Aires.
A Hybe official emphasized the strategic importance of the region, stating, “We are closely watching the rapid growth and immense potential of the Latin American market.” The company’s vision aims to establish Latin America as a pivotal strategic hub, effectively bridging Asia, English-speaking territories, and the broader Spanish-speaking world for future K-pop expansion.
