‘Salmokji’: Supernatural Horror Hits 3 Million Admissions

'Salmokji': Supernatural Horror Hits 3 Million Admissions

The critically acclaimed Korean horror film, “Salmokji,” continues its impressive run, drawing 147,323 admissions over the past weekend (Friday to Sunday). This surge brings its total audience to a significant 3.02 million, as reported by the Korean Film Council.

This remarkable achievement places “Salmokji” hot on the heels of the 2003 classic, “A Tale of Two Sisters,” which currently holds the title as the most-watched Korean horror film with 3.14 million admissions.

Released on April 8, “Salmokji” plunges viewers into a chilling narrative. It follows a dedicated filming crew, spearheaded by Soo-in (portrayed by the talented Kim Hye-yoon), as they journey to a remote location under immense pressure to meet a deadline. However, their mission swiftly transforms into a descent into inescapable, swamp-like terror as the clock ticks relentlessly.

Adding to its eerie atmosphere, the film’s namesake location, Salmokji, is a real-life reservoir situated in Yesan County, South Chungcheong Province. This site is notorious among locals for its long history of paranormal activity, widely rumored to be a hotspot for ghost sightings and unexplained phenomena.

In the broader weekend box office landscape, the highly anticipated “The Devil Wears Prada 2,” a prequel to the iconic 2006 Hollywood comedy, claimed the top spot with 195,514 admissions. The beloved animation, “The Super Mario Galaxy Movie,” secured second place with 184,014 admissions. Both films made their local theatrical debut on April 29, with “Salmokji” impressively holding its ground at third place amidst stiff competition.
