Global K-pop sensation BTS engaged in a significant 40-minute meeting with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum at her Mexico City office, where the supergroup was officially honored with a commemorative plaque from the Mexican government.
Recognizing their profound global influence, the Mexican government bestowed upon the South Korean supergroup the title of “distinguished visitors.” The prestigious plaque commended BTS for “inspiring Mexican youth through its music and for contributing to community-building based on a culture of respect, empathy, diversity and peace,” highlighting their positive social impact.
Following their presidential engagement, BTS captivated a massive crowd alongside President Sheinbaum from a balcony of the historic National Palace. The capital’s iconic central Zocalo square was filled to capacity with tens of thousands of dedicated fans, affectionately known as ARMY, alongside enthusiastic local residents, all eager to witness the K-pop idols.
Emotion ran high among the 50,000 strong crowd, according to BigHit, as fans proudly displayed signs declaring “BTS is always in the heart of Mexico” and “Welcome to Mexico.” Many ARMY members were visibly moved to tears, overwhelmed by the opportunity to catch a glimpse of their beloved group.
Earlier that day, President Sheinbaum had already generated significant buzz during a press briefing, confirming BTS’s visit to the presidential office and their planned public appearance from a palace balcony, building anticipation across Mexico City.
President Sheinbaum lauded BTS’s universally appealing music, specifically highlighting its consistent delivery of powerful messages centered on “friendship, peace and love,” resonating deeply with audiences worldwide.
The renowned seven-member K-pop phenomenon is scheduled for three highly anticipated performances at Mexico City’s Estadio GNP Seguros, a prominent multipurpose stadium. These electrifying concerts, part of their expansive “Arirang” world tour, are slated for May 7, 9, and 10. All tickets for these dates were snapped up swiftly upon release, underscoring BTS’s immense popularity in Mexico.
Back in January, when the concert dates were finalized, President Sheinbaum had already hailed the upcoming performances as a “historic moment,” acknowledging the fervent anticipation among Mexico’s vast youth fan base.
Beyond their cultural influence, these high-profile BTS concerts are poised to deliver a substantial economic boost to Mexico City. The Mexico City Chamber of Commerce projects an impressive economic impact exceeding US$107.5 million from these events.
Mexico stands as a global K-pop powerhouse, ranking as the world’s fifth-largest market. Notably, BTS reigns supreme as the most-streamed act among Mexican K-pop enthusiasts, as indicated by Spotify’s 2025 data, solidifying their unrivaled status.
