The highly anticipated 27th Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) is set to open its doors for a captivating 10-day cinematic journey. The grand opening ceremony will commence at 6:30 p.m. at the prestigious Sori Arts Center in Jeonju, a vibrant cultural hub located approximately 190 kilometers south of Seoul, welcoming film enthusiasts from across Korea and the globe.
Kicking off the festival will be American filmmaker Kent Jones’ poignant drama, “Late Fame.” This acclaimed film, which had its world premiere at the 82nd Venice International Film Festival last August, delves into the life of a poet whose tranquil existence is dramatically reshaped by a new generation of admirers rediscovering his forgotten works.
Throughout JIFF’s extensive 10-day program, attendees will have the opportunity to experience a diverse selection of 237 films screened across Jeonju. This impressive lineup includes 140 international titles, marking a notable increase of 13 films from the previous year, showcasing the festival’s expanding global reach and commitment to world cinema.
The festival’s competitive sections drew significant attention, with a remarkable 421 films from 70 nations submitted to JIFF’s esteemed international competition. Meanwhile, the Korean competition section promises intense viewing with 10 compelling films, including four thought-provoking documentaries, all vying for top honors.
This year’s JIFF will also feature a heartfelt special program dedicated to honoring the legacy of the late, great actor Ahn Sung-ki, who passed away in December. This tribute will provide a unique chance to rediscover lesser-known yet significant works from his illustrious career, celebrating his profound impact on Korean cinema.
Bringing the curtains down on this year’s festival will be Kim Hyun-ji’s powerful film, “Namtaeryeong.” The closing feature follows the compelling journey of farmers who embark on a tractor procession to Seoul, advocating for the impeachment of then-President Yoon Suk Yeol in December 2024, promising a resonant conclusion to JIFF 2024.
