Renowned soprano Sumi Jo is making a significant move, joining SM Classics, the classical and jazz label of a prominent K-pop agency. She will be the label’s inaugural exclusive recording artist, with SM Classics providing robust support for her digital music production and upcoming releases. This partnership marks a new chapter for both the celebrated vocalist and the expanding label.
Fans can look forward to her special anniversary album, aptly titled “Continuum,” which is slated for release next month. SM Entertainment confirms the project will showcase 11 diverse tracks, meticulously curated to reflect the soprano’s remarkable journey through her past, present, and future repertoire. While excitement builds, the precise release date is yet to be announced.
Jo shared insights into “Continuum,” stating, “The album features challenging coloratura arias I’ve never recorded previously, alongside fresh compositions from contemporary artists.” She emphasized her artistic vision: “My goal is to dismantle the barriers between classical music’s rich legacy and modern sensibilities, continuously seeking new musical challenges rather than treading familiar paths.”
The esteemed 63-year-old artist has a busy schedule ahead. She will embark on a nationwide tour starting next month, engaging with audiences across the country. Additionally, Jo is set to host the second Sumi Jo International Singing Competition in France this July, fostering new talent in the operatic world.
Sumi Jo’s illustrious career began with her international debut in 1986 at Italy’s Teatro Verdi in Trieste, where she captivated audiences in the opera “Rigoletto.” Since then, she has firmly established her legacy as one of the globe’s premier sopranos, celebrated for her exquisite artistry and unparalleled vocal prowess.
