Na Hong-jin's Sci-Fi Film 'Hope' Joins Cannes Main Competition

By Woo Jae-yeon

Na Hong-jin’s highly anticipated sci-fi thriller, “Hope,” has officially been invited to the prestigious competition section of the 79th Cannes Film Festival. This marks a significant moment for Korean cinema, as “Hope” becomes the first Korean film in four years to contend for the coveted Palme d’Or, the festival’s top prize.

The last Korean film to compete for the Palme d’Or was Park Chan-wook’s critically acclaimed “Decision to Leave” in 2022.

This latest selection solidifies director Na Hong-jin’s celebrated standing at Cannes, with every one of his feature films now having received an invitation. His debut work, “The Chaser,” first screened in the Midnight Screenings section in 2008, followed by “The Yellow Sea” in Un Certain Regard in 2011. His widely praised horror film, “The Wailing,” also graced the festival’s non-competition section in 2016.

Set against the backdrop of a quaint seaside village, “Hope” reunites director Na with his “The Wailing” star, Hwang Jung-min. Hwang takes on the role of a dedicated police officer tasked with investigating the sudden and unsettling appearance of mysterious entities plaguing the area, promising a gripping narrative.

The film boasts an impressive, star-studded ensemble cast, featuring prominent Korean actors such as Zo In-sung and “Squid Game” breakout star Jung Ho-yeon. Adding to the international appeal, Hollywood talents Michael Fassbender, known for his roles in “Shame” (2011) and “Steve Jobs” (2015), and Academy Award-winner Alicia Vikander, celebrated for “The Danish Girl” (2015) and “Tomb Raider” (2018), are slated to portray the enigmatic beings central to this thrilling sci-fi narrative.

The 79th Cannes Film Festival is scheduled to unfold in the picturesque French resort city from May 12 to 23. This year’s edition holds additional significance for Korean cinema enthusiasts, as acclaimed Korean auteur Park Chan-wook will preside over the competition jury, adding another layer of anticipation to the event.
