During the extended holiday weekend, “The King’s Warden” dominated the South Korean box office, drawing a total of 2.67 million viewers from Friday to Wednesday. The film accounted for a significant 62.5 percent of all box-office revenue, according to data from the Korean Film Council.
Since its release on February 4th, “The King’s Warden” has amassed a cumulative audience of 4.17 million, making it the biggest box-office success of the year so far. It has comfortably surpassed the previous record holder, the romance film “Once We Were Us,” which had 2.56 million viewers.
Directed by Jang Hang-jun, “The King’s Warden” presents a fictionalized retelling of historical events. The story revolves around the unlikely bond that develops between village chief Eom Heung-do (played by Yoo Hai-jin) and the young, exiled King Danjong (played by Park Ji-hoon) during the king’s time in the village.
Ryoo Seung-wan’s action thriller “Humint” secured the second position, attracting 980,000 moviegoers over the five-day period. Its total viewership now stands at 1.28 million since its release on February 11th.
