SEOUL, Feb. 4 (Yonhap) — Get ready, ARMY! BTS is set to make a monumental comeback with a massive free concert at Gwanghwamun Square and the adjacent royal palace on March 21. The buzz is building around how the K-pop megastars will utilize this historic backdrop for an unforgettable spectacle.
Early predictions point to a breathtaking performance that seamlessly blends Korean traditional heritage with cutting-edge stage production, promising a unique and unforgettable experience for fans worldwide.
According to industry insiders and Seoul city officials, plans are underway for an opening sequence titled “BTS The Comeback Live: Arirang,” slated to kick off at 8 p.m. on that day. Sources suggest the seven members will emerge from within the palace grounds, traversing Geunjeongmun and Heungnyemun gates before exiting through the iconic Gwanghwamun gate. The three major southern gates of Gyeongbok Palace will reportedly be opened wide for this grand entrance.

Adding fuel to the excitement, reports indicate that BTS has secured permission to utilize these three gates, as well as the “woldae” – a historically significant ceremonial stage in front of the main gate, once used by Joseon Dynasty kings (1392-1910) for royal rituals and public appearances.
This symbolic royal procession aims to create a majestic entrance leading to the main stage, which is expected to be erected on the sprawling lawn at the northern end of Gwanghwamun Square. Whether this procession will be performed live or prerecorded remains under consideration.
Once on stage, the K-pop icons are expected to deliver a performance featuring 50 dancers and 13 members of a traditional music ensemble, further emphasizing the themes explored in their fifth studio album, “Arirang.”

To enhance the audience’s immersion, a captivating media facade showcasing motifs of Korean traditional culture will be projected onto the walls of Gwanghwamun gate during the performance. Similar projections are also planned for the Sungnyemun gate and its walls on March 20, coinciding with the album’s highly anticipated release.
The sheer scale of the production is a testament to the importance of the event.
Organizers are preparing to accommodate an estimated 15,000 lucky spectators in Gwanghwamun Square. Furthermore, the show will be broadcast live on massive screens for an additional 13,000 fans at Seoul Plaza in front of City Hall and its surrounding intersection. However, these numbers are subject to change based on ongoing safety assessments.
Keep your eyes peeled! Reservations for the free concert are expected to open on major online ticketing platforms after an official announcement is made on Hybe’s popular K-pop fan community platform, Weverse.
Despite the official capacity, experts predict that upwards of 200,000 people could flock to the area – significantly exceeding the permitted number – as passionate fans without tickets gather outside the designated zones to share in the electrifying atmosphere.
The spectacular event will be directed by the renowned British director Hamish Hamilton, celebrated for his work on the Super Bowl halftime show, and will be broadcast live on Netflix. This marks a significant milestone for the streaming giant, representing its first-ever global livestream of a show from Korea, targeting a staggering 300 million users across 190 countries.
The excitement doesn’t stop there! Following the concert, the documentary film “BTS: The Return” will premiere on Netflix on March 27, offering an intimate look at the band’s creative process behind the new album.
After a hiatus of three years and nine months, the highly anticipated 14-track album is scheduled to drop at 1 p.m. on March 20. Don’t miss out!
