The Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency (KOTRA) announced Thursday a significant government-to-government agreement with Finland for the export of K9 self-propelled howitzers from Hanwha Aerospace. This landmark defense deal is valued at 546 million euros (approximately $637 million).

Under the terms of this robust government-to-government contract, formalized with Finland’s Ministry of Defense in Helsinki, Hanwha Aerospace is set to supply 112 K9 self-propelled howitzers to the Finnish armed forces. This strategic procurement highlights strengthening defense ties between South Korea and Finland.

The official signing ceremony brought together key figures from both nations. KOTRA President Kang Kyun-sung, Hanwha Aerospace CEO Son Jae-il, and South Korean Ambassador to Finland Kim Jung-ha represented South Korea. Finland’s delegation included Olli Ruutu, Director General at the Ministry of Defense, alongside other prominent military officials.

This substantial defense contract culminates seven months of diligent negotiations between the two countries, which commenced in August of last year, demonstrating a mutual commitment to advanced military cooperation.

Notably, this latest acquisition marks Finland’s second procurement of the acclaimed K9 artillery system from South Korea. Helsinki previously integrated 96 K9 howitzers into its defense capabilities through a similar government-to-government contract in 2017, showcasing Finland’s enduring confidence in the K9’s performance.

A South Korean official emphasized that Finland’s decision to purchase additional K9s, after eight years of operational experience, underscores the weapon’s exceptional reliability and consistent performance, even under extreme weather conditions prevalent in the Arctic region. This long-term trust is a powerful testament to the K9 Thunder’s robust engineering.

The K9 Thunder stands as a cutting-edge 155mm self-propelled howitzer, renowned for its impressive operational capabilities. It can accurately engage targets over 40 kilometers away, boasts a rapid-fire capability of three rounds within just 15 seconds, and achieves road speeds of up to 67 kilometers per hour, making it a highly mobile and potent artillery system.

In recent years, South Korea has solidified its position as a global leader in arms exports, with the K9 self-propelled howitzer emerging as one of its flagship defense products. Since its debut in 1999, over 1,300 K9 units have been sold worldwide, with exports to more than 10 countries, including key partners like Poland, Norway, Estonia, Romania, and Australia, underscoring its widespread international adoption and operational success.

“We are delighted that Finland has once again chosen the K9, especially after eight years of successful operation near the challenging Arctic region,” stated KOTRA President Kang. He added, “This case serves as a crucial example, powerfully demonstrating the unparalleled credibility of Korean weapons exports in diverse global markets.”

KOTRA highlighted its integral role in facilitating this government-to-government agreement. This procurement arrangement, common for defense acquisitions between state entities, offers significant advantages including enhanced contractual stability, superior transparency, and accelerated execution timelines, ensuring a streamlined and secure transaction process for advanced military equipment.
