In a proactive measure to address escalating costs and ensure stable availability, the South Korean government announced it would implement weekly market checkups across the automotive lubricant and marine fuel sectors. This strategic initiative, revealed by the industry ministry on Wednesday, aims to effectively curb rising prices and bolster the consistent supply of these crucial products nationwide.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources (MOTIE) officially unveiled this comprehensive plan during a high-level meeting. The gathering brought together officials from various relevant ministries and key stakeholders from the fuel industry to discuss robust responses to the mounting prices of essential automotive lubricants, including engine oil, and persistent supply disruptions impacting marine fuel products.

MOTIE further disclosed that it has been spearheading an intergovernmental inspection team. This dedicated team is actively investigating the underlying causes behind the nation’s current shortages in automotive lubricant supplies, particularly given the seemingly stable domestic production levels of the product.

Confirming the enigma, recent data compiled by the Korea Petroleum Association indicates robust domestic output. South Korea’s lubricant production reached 760,000 barrels last month, reflecting a slight but notable increase from the 710,000 barrels recorded in March of the previous year.
