Korea and France Forge Stronger Cultural and Creative Ties for Future Growth

By Shim Sun-ah

Seoul, Korea – South Korea and France are set to deepen their cultural and creative collaboration, with both nations committing to closer cooperation on upcoming anniversary celebrations. During a recent high-level meeting in Seoul, South Korean Culture Minister Chae Hwi-young and French Culture Minister Catherine Pegard affirmed their shared vision for an enhanced cultural exchange.

The extensive French cultural programming officially commenced on March 7 in Bucheon, a city southwest of Seoul. The launch featured a captivating concert by the renowned Bucheon Philharmonic Orchestra. French principal conductor Adrien Perruchon led the performance, showcasing the exceptional talent of rising French pianist Arielle Beck as a soloist, marking an auspicious start to the year-long cultural initiatives.

Throughout the year, a diverse array of cultural exchange events is planned across both countries. These include vibrant exhibitions, dynamic performances, and engaging film festivals, all designed to foster mutual understanding and appreciation between the two nations.

During their productive meeting, the culture ministers also engaged in discussions regarding the burgeoning influence of cultural heritage and contemporary creative content on various lifestyle industries. They explored synergies in sectors such as gastronomy, beauty, fashion, and tourism, acknowledging their significant economic and societal impact.

Minister Chae articulated his hope that Korea and France would actively share experiences and intensify communication. His aim is to position cultural heritage and creative content as pivotal drivers for future economic growth. He highlighted the global phenomenon of K-pop, specifically citing the supergroup BTS and their widely acclaimed livestreamed performance at Seoul’s Gwanghwamun Square, as a prime example of expanding economic influence.

Further solidifying this commitment, an amendment to the Korea-France Agreement on Cultural and Technological Cooperation was exchanged earlier on Friday. The signing, witnessed by South Korean President Lee Jae Myung and French President Emmanuel Macron, signifies a concerted effort to boost collaboration across rapidly evolving digital creative industries. The revised agreement specifically targets enhanced cooperation in film, music, webtoons, e-sports, and publishing, laying a robust foundation to broaden joint ventures across the entire creative sector.
