Fan-Driven Momentum Propels BTS’s “Swim” to Billboard Hot 100 #1, Testing US Listenership Longevity
BTS has conquered the Billboard Hot 100 chart in the US with “Swim,” the lead single from their highly anticipated fifth full-length album, “Arirang.” This achievement marks their seventh No. 1 hit on the prestigious chart, solidifying their global superstar status.
This latest triumph follows the album’s debut at the top of the Billboard 200, demonstrating BTS’s continued dominance across both of Billboard’s primary album and singles charts in the United States.
BTS remains the only Korean act to achieve multiple No. 1 hits on the Hot 100. Furthermore, members Jimin and Jungkook have also reached the top spot as solo artists, highlighting their individual talent and collective impact.
Music critic Lim Hee-yun suggests that this success reflects both the highly anticipated return of the group and the unwavering support of their devoted global fanbase, known as ARMY.
“With Billboard’s Hot 100 now prioritizing audio streaming and radio airplay over YouTube views, the chart may more accurately reflect organic interest in BTS as a group and their music,” Lim explained. “Given their position as the world’s leading boy band, this result also indicates growing attention from US radio stations and media outlets.”
However, Lim also cautioned that the initial chart performance of “Swim” might be largely fueled by initial fan excitement. He emphasized that the song’s long-term success hinges on attracting and retaining a broader US audience beyond the core fanbase.
“The enduring popularity of ‘Swim’ will depend on sustained engagement from the general audience over the coming weeks,” he stated.
Notably, within the broader landscape of K-pop, “Golden” from the soundtrack of Netflix’s “KPop Demon Hunters” also reached No. 1 on the Hot 100 in August of the previous year, signifying another significant milestone for K-pop-related music on the global stage.
