Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) announced that it co-hosted a Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology seminar with the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) in Bangkok on Thursday and Friday. The seminar focused on strengthening bilateral collaboration in the field of next-generation nuclear energy.
This event follows a memorandum of understanding signed last June, solidifying cooperation within the SMR sector between the two nations.
Approximately 80 experts from Thailand and South Korea participated in the seminar. Attendees included representatives from Thailand’s Energy Ministry, regulatory bodies, industry leaders, and academic professionals. Discussions centered around the prerequisites for introducing SMR technology in Thailand.
Seminar sessions featured presentations on energy policies from both countries. Experts delivered insights into the characteristics, development progress, safety considerations, and supply chain development of innovative SMRs.
Key Korean nuclear industry stakeholders, including Korea Electric Power Corp. E&C (KEPCO E&C), Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute (KAERI), Kepco Nuclear Fuel (KNF), and Doosan Enerbility, engaged in the seminar. These participants contributed expertise spanning the entire nuclear value chain.
Siriwat Chedsi, Deputy Governor of EGAT, emphasized that this collaboration with KHNP, renowned for its extensive nuclear plant operational experience and technical knowledge, will be instrumental in supporting Thailand’s energy transition policy.
“This seminar is expected to be a significant catalyst in establishing a strong foundation for SMR collaboration,” stated Chedsi.
Park In-sik, Head of KHNP’s Export Business Division, commented that the event has reinforced the framework for technological exchange between the two countries.
“KHNP remains dedicated to working closely with EGAT to facilitate Thailand’s sustainable energy transition. We also aim to expand SMR business opportunities throughout the ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) region,” added Park.
