LG Energy Solution has officially inaugurated its first Canadian battery manufacturing plant, NextStar Energy, positioning it as a pivotal hub for energy storage system (ESS) batteries in North America.

The South Korean battery manufacturer announced Friday that it held a grand opening ceremony Thursday for the Windsor, Ontario facility, operated by its Canadian subsidiary, NextStar Energy.

The event saw attendance from prominent figures from both Canada and South Korea, including Ontario Premier Doug Ford, Canadian Industry Minister Melanie Joly, South Korean Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan, and LG Energy Solution CEO Kim Dong-myung.

During the ceremony, Minister Kim underscored the enduring friendship between the two nations, emphasizing Canada’s steadfast support for Korea during challenging times.

“The NextStar Energy plant holds particular significance as a symbol of industrial cooperation, built in Ontario – a region that contributed troops to defend the freedom of Korea,” he stated.

Minister Joly highlighted the project’s role in advancing Canada’s ambition to become a global leader in advanced battery manufacturing, building upon the existing Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two countries concerning future mobility collaboration.

“This new center of advanced battery manufacturing will accelerate our leadership in next-generation vehicles by powering the cars we build, reinforce the strength of our energy grids and develop the strategic technologies our partners and allies rely on,” she said. “Canada is not just participating in the future of mobility, but we are shaping it.”

The expansive 390,000 square-meter plant will produce lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery cells for ESS applications, supporting AI data centers, municipal and provincial power grids, and e-commerce and technology infrastructure.

Production commenced in November of last year, and the facility has already manufactured over one million battery cells to meet the growing demand within the North American ESS market.

Since its inception in 2022, the project has seen investments exceeding 5 billion Canadian dollars ($3.66 billion). The plant currently employs around 1,300 individuals and plans to increase its workforce to approximately 2,500 as production ramps up.

NextStar Energy was initially established in 2022 as a joint venture between LG Energy Solution and automaker Stellantis, focusing on electric vehicle (EV) batteries. However, in response to an industry-wide slowdown in EV demand, the Canadian facility broadened its scope to include ESS batteries.

Last month, LG Energy Solution acquired full ownership of NextStar Energy, prioritizing ESS battery production. With the acquisition of Stellantis’ stake finalized, the South Korean company now has sole control of the plant, operating it as a wholly-owned subsidiary.

Observers note that the high-profile attendance from both countries highlights the symbolic importance of the plant for Canada’s developing battery supply chain.

Windsor has historically been a significant manufacturing hub in Canada, centered around the automotive industry due to its proximity to Detroit, the former epicenter of North American auto production.

However, starting in the mid-2000s, Windsor experienced a prolonged period of economic decline due to structural changes in the broader North American automotive sector and the global financial crisis, which significantly impacted local manufacturing.

In recent years, the city has been actively working to revitalize its economy by transitioning to future mobility sectors, including EVs and battery manufacturing. The NextStar Energy facility is expected to be a cornerstone of Canada’s efforts to cultivate an advanced manufacturing ecosystem focused on electric mobility and next-generation energy technologies.

“The opening of the NextStar Energy battery facility is a milestone for southwestern Ontario, creating thousands of local jobs and benefiting workers across our province’s automotive and advanced manufacturing supply chains,” said Premier Doug Ford. “NextStar’s commitment to Ontario workers reflects the hard work our government has done to cut taxes and red tape, attract historic levels of investment and build the most competitive, resilient, self-reliant economy in the G7.”

LG Energy Solution CEO Kim stated that the company’s decision to assume complete control of the facility demonstrated “absolute confidence” in its potential.

“As Canada’s first large-scale battery manufacturing facility, NextStar Energy will play a critical role in powering the nation’s next chapter of electrification,” he said.
