BTS Jungkook’s Live Stream Controversy: Agency Frustration, Solo Success, and Group Tensions

BTS member Jungkook is facing scrutiny after a recent late-night livestream where he used strong language and expressed frustration with his agency, Hybe. This was followed by a contrasting post promising dedication to BTS’s upcoming comeback. This incident has sparked debate among fans and highlighted the pressures of balancing solo stardom with group obligations for one of K-pop’s biggest global icons.

On February 26th, Jungkook engaged in a 90-minute live broadcast on Weverse, Hybe’s fan platform, while drinking with his brother and a friend. During the stream, he voiced criticisms about aspects of Hybe’s management and admitted to past smoking habits.

“I’m 30 now. I don’t know why I can’t talk about this. I used to smoke a lot, but I worked really hard to quit,” he stated.

The singer also anticipated Hybe’s potential disapproval of his comments, acknowledging he hadn’t pre-arranged them and spoke out of frustration.

When concerned fans urged him to end the livestream, he resisted, asserting his autonomy.

Shortly after the broadcast, Jungkook posted on Weverse about BTS’s impending album release, pledging his utmost dedication to the comeback – a shift that quickly grabbed attention online.

Jungkook’s use of English profanities and a particular hand gesture during the livestream were also captured and widely shared on social media, further fueling the controversy.

Reactions to the livestream have been highly divided.

Some fans lauded his candor and voiced concern for his well-being, appreciating a more authentic side of the artist. Others deemed the broadcast careless and unprofessional, arguing that drinking on air and swearing were inappropriate for an idol of his stature.

While Jungkook has previously conducted informal livestreams, openly airing grievances about his agency in such a direct manner is unusual. Some analysts view this as a sign of growing tension between his burgeoning solo career and his commitments within BTS.

This incident occurs amidst remarkable individual accomplishments for Jungkook. Just prior to the livestream, he secured the 18th position on World Famous Things’ “Top 25 Most Famous Persons in the World” list, being the only Korean individual included. He also featured on AOL’s “Top 15 Most Famous People in the World,” one of only two male artists, alongside Justin Bieber.

His 2023 solo single “Seven” achieved over 2.5 billion cumulative streams within a month of its release, becoming the first K-pop song to do so, and has since surpassed 2.8 billion streams. Before his military enlistment, he reportedly received an invitation to perform “Standing Next to You” with Usher at the 2024 Super Bowl halftime show, highlighting his recognition as a significant solo artist.

These achievements have propelled Jungkook beyond his group identity, establishing him as a formidable individual brand. This rise is inevitably reshaping expectations and internal group dynamics.

The episode has also brought renewed attention to comments made by fellow BTS member RM in December, where he revealed repeated internal discussions about whether disbanding or suspending the group would be the better option.

“There was a reason we decided not to promote a new album in the second half (of 2025), but I don’t have the authority to explain it,” RM stated at the time. “I thought tens of thousands of times whether it would be better to disband the team or pause it.”

Hybe has yet to release an official statement regarding Jungkook’s livestream.

Meanwhile, BTS is scheduled to release their fifth full-length album “Arirang” on March 20th, followed by a free comeback performance at Gwanghwamun Square in Seoul the next day. A new world tour is planned to begin in April at Goyang Stadium in Gyeonggi Province, encompassing 79 shows across 34 cities globally.
