South Korea Strengthens Global Economic Cooperation Amid Trade Volatility

South Korea is strategically leveraging its robust economic cooperation network, meticulously built through extensive summit diplomacy, to effectively navigate current global trade uncertainties. This proactive approach aims to address challenges like geopolitical tensions, particularly those impacting the Middle East, as announced by the finance ministry on Monday.

Finance Minister Koo Yun-cheol emphasized this crucial strategy during a recent meeting with key ministries on external economic affairs. He highlighted the imperative to mitigate emerging risks while actively fostering new engines for economic growth. Minister Koo stated, “To effectively address external uncertainties, South Korea will proactively utilize the strong foundation for economic cooperation established through summit diplomacy.” He further directed relevant ministries to promptly implement all Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) signed during these high-level summits, ensuring swift action.

The government’s comprehensive plan focuses on ensuring the stable management of potential external risks. Concurrently, efforts are being intensified to build stronger cooperation with new international markets, providing proactive support to South Korean companies as they expand their global business opportunities and secure competitive advantages.

During the meeting, discussions also included maintaining close coordination with Washington following the Office of the US Trade Representative’s recent proposal. This proposal suggests a 12.5 percent tariff on goods from South Korea and dozens of other economies, citing alleged failures to enforce import bans on products potentially made with forced labor. The finance ministry affirmed, “We plan to continue constructive talks with the US to stably manage our vital trade relationship.”

Furthermore, South Korea reiterated its commitment to fulfilling investment pledges made to the United States. This includes a thorough review of the viability of all potential projects to ensure strategic alignment and mutual benefits.

Beyond existing alliances, participants also reviewed the significant progress in ongoing negotiations with Bangladesh for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA). The objective is to expand bilateral cooperation across crucial sectors such as infrastructure development, advanced manufacturing, and sustainable energy solutions, thereby deepening economic ties between the two nations.

Another key agenda item centered on South Korea’s Official Development Assistance (ODA) projects within the burgeoning artificial intelligence (AI) sector. Aligned with Seoul’s vision of promoting a “Global AI Basic Society”—aimed at democratizing access to AI technology for all—the government plans to make significant contributions. The finance ministry highlighted, “The government plans to promote Seoul’s signature AI business models to developing countries,” noting that these impactful ODA projects will simultaneously serve as a crucial platform for South Korean companies to expand their presence into dynamic overseas markets.
