G-Dragon Boosts Korean Heritage with Star Power

For nearly two decades, G-Dragon has reigned as one of K-pop’s most influential artists. This month, however, the iconic Big Bang member is stepping into a significant new role beyond music — serving as the public face of South Korea’s efforts to promote one of the world’s most significant gatherings on cultural heritage.

On July 3, the Korea Heritage Service officially appointed G-Dragon as an honorary ambassador for the 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee, scheduled to be held in Busan from July 19 to 29. As South Korea prepares to host this prestigious annual meeting for the first time, G-Dragon’s appointment underscores the artist’s expanding involvement in public initiatives spanning culture, diplomacy, and philanthropy.

This prestigious UNESCO appointment is the latest in a series of high-profile public roles that have solidified G-Dragon’s position as one of South Korea’s most visible cultural ambassadors, extending his influence far beyond the entertainment industry.

In October, he previously served as an honorary ambassador for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Gyeongju, North Gyeongsang Province. During the event, G-Dragon performed at the leaders’ welcome dinner, attended by prominent figures including President Lee Jae Myung and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Weeks later, G-Dragon achieved another milestone, becoming the youngest recipient of the Okgwan Order of Cultural Merit. This esteemed recognition is one of South Korea’s highest government honors, bestowed for significant contributions to the arts and culture. Acknowledged for helping expand the global reach of Korean popular culture, he also became the first idol singer to receive the Okgwan grade of this distinguished decoration, following BTS who received the Hwagwan Order of Cultural Merit in 2018.

G-Dragon’s public profile has also expanded into the realms of science and education through groundbreaking collaborations with KAIST. Appointed a visiting professor in the university’s Department of Mechanical Engineering in June 2024, G-Dragon has actively participated in projects exploring the convergence of advanced technology and Korean cultural content.

One remarkable collaboration culminated in the first-ever transmission of music by a Korean artist into space. Working alongside KAIST’s Space Institute, Microsoft Azure OpenAI’s Sora, and the US-based Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) project, G-Dragon broadcast his song “Home Sweet Home” and an AI-generated music video into space. This pioneering effort made him the first Korean artist to participate in the long-running SETI initiative.

The JusPeace Vision

G-Dragon’s deep commitment to public engagement is also vividly reflected in the JusPeace Foundation, which he established in August 2025 and currently serves as its honorary chair.

This nonprofit organization was founded with a mission to address social issues through the transformative power of art and creativity. It aims to support emerging artists, promote a healthy copyright culture, and expand public-interest initiatives through various artistic endeavors. Its impactful activities include music therapy programs designed for young people struggling with drug addiction and projects focused on improving mental well-being through engaging with art.

“Artists don’t simply create art. They can also bring happiness and peace to society,” G-Dragon expressed when introducing the foundation in October. He further added, “Beyond spreading love and peace through music, I have always believed artists can help more people by engaging in volunteer work or establishing public foundations that create positive social impact.”

This very vision has now seamlessly integrated into UNESCO’s global heritage campaign.

In April, the JusPeace Foundation formalized its commitment by signing a memorandum of understanding with the Korea Heritage Service to actively support promotional activities for the World Heritage Committee. This month, in a significant collaboration with the UNESCO World Heritage Centre, the foundation also launched a public fundraising campaign dedicated to the World Heritage Fund.

Donations raised through this vital campaign will directly contribute to safeguarding precious World Heritage sites that are currently threatened by war, climate change, and natural disasters.
