Global X Japan, the specialized exchange-traded fund (ETF) unit of Mirae Asset Global Investments in Japan, has achieved a significant milestone, exceeding 1 trillion yen (approximately $6.17 billion) in assets under management (AUM). This remarkable accomplishment highlights its swift expansion and strengthening footprint in Japan’s growing ETF market.
According to Mirae Asset’s announcement on Monday, Global X Japan’s AUM officially reached an impressive 1.14 trillion yen by the end of June. The firm initially surpassed the critical 1 trillion-yen threshold in May and has consistently sustained strong investment inflows since.
Founded in 2019, Global X Japan distinguished itself as Japan’s pioneering ETF-focused asset manager. The company has strategically developed its business by offering innovative thematic and income-generating ETFs, encompassing popular sectors like artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and advanced covered-call strategies. Demonstrating exceptional growth, its AUM has surged 7.5-fold over the last three years, reflecting a robust compound annual growth rate of 89.7 percent.
Mirae Asset attributes this remarkable growth to Global X Japan’s meticulously curated product lineup, precisely tailored to evolving investor demand, alongside a diversified and effective distribution strategy. Since launching its inaugural ETF in 2020, Global X Japan has consistently introduced new ETFs, listing an average of 12 per year, and now expertly manages a comprehensive portfolio of 71 distinct products.
Notably, earlier this year, Global X Japan launched the groundbreaking Global X Nasdaq 100 Daily Covered Call ETF. This innovative product stands as the first overseas fund of funds designed to track a Korean-listed ETF as its underlying asset—specifically, the TIGER US Nasdaq 100 Target Daily Covered Call ETF. The new offering garnered immense interest, attracting approximately 14 billion won (over $9.29 million) on its launch day alone, and swiftly surpassed $200 million in net assets within just two months.
Global X Japan has also significantly benefited from Japan’s newly revamped New NISA tax-free investment program, which was introduced in 2024. This program has substantially boosted retail investor demand for ETFs across the nation. Mirae Asset reports that Japan’s overall ETF market has attracted approximately $2.7 billion in net inflows year-to-date, with Global X Japan impressively capturing roughly $1.5 billion of that total.
Further solidifying its success, Global X Japan achieved its first annual profit since its inception, as reported under Japan’s fiscal-year accounting system. To commemorate the momentous occasion of exceeding 1 trillion yen in AUM, the company hosted a celebratory ceremony in Japan last month, where it also presented its ambitious future expansion strategy.
Commenting on this significant achievement, Seiji Nakata, president of Daiwa Securities Group, stated, “Reaching 1 trillion yen in assets under management is an important milestone. We hope Global X Japan will continue to grow into one of Japan’s leading ETF asset managers.”
Kim Young-hwan, Head of Global Management at Mirae Asset Global Investments, affirmed the company’s commitment to further expanding its diverse ETF lineup. He emphasized a strategy of integrating deep local market expertise with Mirae Asset’s robust global ETF capabilities to drive sustained growth.
