Seoul’s benchmark KOSPI index staged a notable rebound on Monday, recovering from an initial dip to track gains observed on Wall Street. Despite this positive movement in the South Korean stock market, investor sentiment remained tempered by escalating tensions in the Middle East, highlighting ongoing global market uncertainties.
The Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) initially opened 0.85 percent lower, reflecting early morning cautiousness. However, robust buying activity saw the benchmark index reverse course, climbing 27.48 points, or 0.37 percent, to reach 7,503.42 by 9:15 a.m. local time.
This positive momentum in the South Korean stock market largely mirrored Friday’s impressive gains in US equities. A significant contributing factor was the highly anticipated multibillion-dollar US share offering by leading South Korean chipmaker, SK hynix, which generated considerable market interest.
SK hynix’s American Depository Receipts (ADRs) performed exceptionally well on the Nasdaq, closing at $168 per share. This significantly surpassed their initial offering price of $149, signaling strong investor confidence in the semiconductor giant.
Across the Atlantic, major US indices also recorded advances. The Dow Jones Industrial Average closed up 0.29 percent at 52,637.01 points, while the technology-focused Nasdaq composite index also saw a 0.29 percent increase, reaching 26,281.61.
Despite these positive market signals, lingering geopolitical concerns continued to weigh on investors’ minds. Renewed tensions in the Middle East remained a primary source of caution for global financial markets.
These concerns intensified following Sunday’s developments, where the US military conducted strikes against Iran. This action was a direct response to recent drone attacks by Iran targeting US allies within the Middle East region.
Back in Seoul, the performance of key large-cap stocks presented a mixed picture, reflecting diverse sector-specific influences.
Among the major players, market bellwether Samsung Electronics saw a 0.7 percent rise. Automotive giant Hyundai Motor also performed strongly, climbing an impressive 3.72 percent.
The energy sector witnessed significant gains, with leading refiner SK Innovation surging 8.36 percent. Battery technology leader LG Energy Solution also advanced robustly, increasing by 4.45 percent.
Conversely, some prominent stocks experienced declines. Despite its strong ADR performance, chip giant SK hynix fell 4.36 percent in Seoul trading. Leading wireless services provider SK Telecom also saw a slight dip of 0.23 percent.
