LG Energy Solution announced Friday its selection as a key operator for a significant government-backed initiative aimed at deploying **artificial intelligence-based energy storage systems (AI-ESS)**. This strategic project seeks to substantially enhance **power grid capacity** across South Korea’s southwestern regions, marking a crucial step towards a more resilient and efficient national **energy infrastructure**.
The leading **South Korean battery manufacturer** confirmed its selection for the Ministry of Climate, Energy and Environment’s pioneering program focused on **AI-powered ESS solutions** directly integrated into the **electricity distribution network**.
Demonstrating a collaborative approach, LG Energy Solution secured its role through a competitive bidding process, forming a robust consortium with **Shinhan Asset Management**.
This groundbreaking program represents South Korea’s inaugural government-supported initiative specifically dedicated to integrating **ESS facilities** directly onto the **distribution network**. Its core design aims to significantly **reduce grid congestion** and facilitate greater access for **renewable energy facilities** to connect with the national grid.
A comprehensive selection process identified nine operators to manage a total of 32 distribution lines nationwide. Notably, LG Energy Solution secured the most substantial allocation, winning seven distribution lines. This achievement provides the company with a maximum combined **storage capacity** of 140 **megawatt-hours (MWh)**, representing the largest share awarded to any single operator.
The consortium of eight other esteemed operators participating in this vital national project includes **VPP Lab**, **Kepco KDN**, **SK Eternix**, **HD Hyundai Electric**, **Gridwiz**, **Korea East-West Power**, **Korea Midland Power**, and **Hyundai Engineering & Construction**.
As part of its critical role, LG Energy Solution will be responsible for supplying advanced, **high-performance batteries** and meticulously overseeing both the construction and the **AI-based operational management** of these sophisticated **energy storage systems**. Commercial operations for these long-term facilities are slated to commence in **2027**, with an expected operational lifespan spanning **20 years**.
The company anticipates that this project will directly facilitate the integration of approximately **40 megawatts (MW)** of **solar power facilities** within the **Honam region**, addressing current grid connection waiting lists and boosting regional **renewable energy capacity**.
Furthermore, this initiative is projected to enable the regional **power network** to accommodate an impressive additional **52.4 gigawatt-hours (GWh)** of **renewable electricity** on an annual basis, significantly contributing to South Korea’s clean energy transition goals.
