K-Pop album sales in the first half of this year shattered all previous records, ushering in an unprecedented boom.

According to an analysis of Hanteo Chart’s big data by Hanteo Global (CEO Kwak Young-ho), which is linked in real-time with over 5,000 distributors worldwide, K-Pop album sales for the first half of 2026 reached a staggering 49.53 million copies.

This figure not only impressively surpasses the previous highest first-half sales record from 2023 (46.17 million copies) but also marks a significant surge of over 9.4 million copies (23.4%) compared to the same period last year (40.12 million copies).

This latest achievement underscores that the K-Pop album market has successfully navigated a temporary slowdown and undergone a complete structural improvement.

Historically, the K-Pop album market exhibited consistent growth, from 13.79 million copies in 2017 to 18.57 million in 2019. The onset of the 2020 pandemic, which halted live performances, led to a compensatory surge in album consumption, culminating in an unprecedented peak of 103.3 million copies in 2023.

Following the pandemic’s end, 2024 (86.95 million copies) and 2025 (86.24 million copies) saw a brief period of stabilization. Yet, the market retained a size more than four times larger than its pre-pandemic level in 2019.

Finally, in the first half of 2026, even amidst the challenging conditions of a fully normalized global concert market, the K-Pop market achieved its highest-ever first-half sales, demonstrably proving the unparalleled robustness of its fundamentals through data.

This year’s first-half performance indicates the establishment of a ‘stable ecosystem structure’ where the market is robustly driven by a diverse array of artists, rather than the singular dominance of a mega-IP.

A major catalyst for the market in the first half of this year was BTS’s 5th full-length album, ‘ARIRANG,’ which marked their return as a complete group after military service, recording 4.16 million first-week sales (chudong).

Nevertheless, even excluding BTS’s album, the combined sales of 14 other albums that achieved first-week million-seller status totaled approximately 22.6 million copies. This demonstrates a formidable strength, nearly matching the peak boom period of the first half of 2023 (where 12 albums combined for 23.27 million copies).

Notably, the market’s mid-tier has significantly strengthened. While the first half of 2023 saw teams with over 4 million first-week sales concentrated in just two groups, SEVENTEEN and Stray Kids, the first half of 2026 witnessed an expansion from 12 to 14 teams achieving first-week million-seller status.

Alongside established acts like BTS, BLACKPINK, SEVENTEEN, ATEEZ, TOMORROW X TOGETHER, ENHYPEN, TREASURE, BOYNEXTDOOR, RIIZE, &TEAM, TWS, and PLAVE, a significant number of rookie groups within 1-2 years of their debut have also joined the ranks of million-sellers, including NCT WISH (debuted Feb 2024), Cortis (debuted Aug 2025), and AlphaDriveOne (debuted Jan 2026). ATEEZ, in particular, achieved million-seller status twice in the first half alone.

Reviewing Hanteo Chart’s data flow over the past five years (2021-2025), the K-Pop album market has consistently exhibited a clear “lower first half, higher second half” trend, with significantly higher sales typically recorded in the latter half of each year.

Given the unprecedented baseline established in the first half of this year, if this historical trend continues, the total annual K-Pop album sales for 2026 are highly likely to surpass the all-time high of 2023 (103.3 million copies) and set a new historic record.

Kwak Young-ho, CEO of Hanteo Global, stated, “The data from the first half of 2026 provides undeniable evidence that K-Pop has transcended a fleeting trend to firmly establish itself as a core infrastructure within the global music market. Moving forward, we are committed to setting the standard for entertainment technology, connecting global fandoms and the industry through our unparalleled big data expertise.”
