LG Electronics Drives Record Sales and Operating Profit with Home Appliances, Vehicle Components, and HVAC, Beating Market Expectations

LG Electronics’ headquarters in Yeouido, western Seoul (LG Electronics)

LG Electronics announced on Tuesday its unprecedented second-quarter financial results, achieving its best-ever performance. This stellar success was fueled by surging global sales in key divisions: home appliances, cutting-edge vehicle components, and high-demand heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) systems. These results significantly underscore LG’s strong market leadership and strategic growth.

In its recent regulatory filing, LG Electronics revealed an estimated operating profit of 1.58 trillion won ($1.04 billion) for the April-June period. This represents an extraordinary 146.9 percent increase year-over-year. The company’s revenue also saw a substantial rise, climbing 14.9 percent from the previous year to reach 23.83 trillion won, reflecting robust business expansion.

These preliminary financial outcomes far exceeded market predictions. Data from financial provider FnGuide indicated that local brokerages had projected LG Electronics to post an operating profit of 1.06 trillion won and revenues of 22.54 trillion won for the quarter, highlighting the considerable margin by which LG surpassed these forecasts.

For the entire first half of the year, LG reported record-breaking figures, with sales reaching 47.56 trillion won and operating profit totaling 3.25 trillion won. Notably, LG’s first-half operating profit alone surpassed the 2.48 trillion won recorded for the entirety of the previous year, demonstrating accelerated and sustained profitability.

Achieving these impressive results is particularly significant given a challenging global operating environment, marked by ongoing geopolitical conflicts in the Middle East and persistent economic uncertainties worldwide. LG’s performance reflects its resilience and effective risk management strategies.

LG attributed its exceptional performance to robust sales growth across its core businesses and a continuously improving profit structure. Key factors contributing to this success include enhanced cost efficiency measures, the expansion of subscription services, the strong performance of its webOS platform, and optimized online sales channels.

Earnings were also positively impacted by a partial refund of tariffs previously paid in the U.S. last year. However, LG emphasized that even excluding this one-off gain, its second-quarter operating profit experienced a substantial year-on-year increase, affirming the underlying strength of its operations.

Despite booking costs associated with a voluntary retirement program implemented in April to streamline its workforce, the overall impact on earnings was effectively managed. This was achieved through stringent cost-control measures across all business divisions and the activation of a company-wide emergency management system designed to proactively address external risks.

Delving into divisional performance, LG’s Home Appliance & Air Solution (H&A) unit continued its impressive growth trajectory. This expansion was driven by a successful dual strategy targeting both the premium product segment and the broader mass market. Furthermore, LG has significantly expanded its business-to-business (B2B) appliance portfolio, introducing offerings such as advanced commercial laundry systems and sophisticated built-in kitchen appliances.

The Home Entertainment (HE) division demonstrated notable improvement compared to the previous year. This turnaround was primarily propelled by strong sales of new premium television models, including the acclaimed OLED evo and innovative Micro RGB TVs. Strategic cost management, meticulous inventory control, and optimized marketing expenditures further solidified the division’s business fundamentals.

LG’s Vehicle component Solutions (VS) unit continued its robust performance, benefiting from a substantial order backlog and strategic partnerships with leading global automakers. The escalating demand for sophisticated premium in-vehicle infotainment systems has been a key driver, firmly establishing this business as a significant new cash-generating segment within LG’s B2B operations.

Looking ahead, LG anticipates the VS unit will sustain its profit-focused growth throughout the second half of the year. This continued expansion will be supported by ongoing initiatives aimed at enhancing the division’s cost structure and operational efficiency.

The Eco Solution division, encompassing LG’s comprehensive heating and cooling systems, experienced heightened sales across international markets. Notably, Europe saw strong demand for air conditioners, spurred by record-breaking heat waves. The division is also capitalizing on emerging demand for energy-efficient heat pumps and integrated unitary HVAC systems, reinforcing its environmental and market leadership.

For the latter half of the year, LG is set to intensify its focus on identifying and cultivating future growth engines. Its component business is strategically diversifying beyond traditional appliance parts like compressors and motors, venturing into cutting-edge areas such as robot actuators. Concurrently, the company is making significant investments in advanced cooling solutions specifically designed for artificial intelligence (AI) data centers, positioning itself at the forefront of technological innovation.

LG Electronics is scheduled to provide a comprehensive release of its net profit figures and detailed business division results for the second quarter during its highly anticipated earnings conference call later this month.
