Singer revisits her debut hit after stepping away from the entertainment industry
K-pop star G.Na is making her highly anticipated return to music, with her first official release since 2016. This comeback comes nearly a decade after a high-profile prostitution scandal significantly impacted her career.
Through a recent social media announcement on Tuesday, the acclaimed artist revealed the chosen track for her comeback: a fan-selected remake of her 2010 debut hit, “I’ll Back Off So You Can Live Better.” This iconic song marks her official re-entry into the K-pop scene.
G.Na shared her personal sentiments about this significant return. “It’s been a long time since I’ve revisited this chapter of my life, but somehow this feels like the right song to start with,” she expressed, adding, “I’m already working on the remake now, and I’m so excited (and honestly a little emotional) to share it with you when it’s ready.”
The original “I’ll Back Off So You Can Live Better,” released in 2010, quickly propelled G.Na to stardom, earning her a music show win just one month post-debut. This breakthrough track paved the way for other successful K-pop hits like “Black & White” and “Top Girl,” solidifying her reputation as one of the most prominent female solo artists in K-pop during the early 2010s.
However, G.Na’s thriving career faced an abrupt and severe setback in 2016 when she was formally charged with engaging in prostitution. Prosecutors detailed allegations that G.Na had accepted 15 million won ($9,700) on three separate occasions for sexual encounters with a Los Angeles businessman.
Despite G.Na’s defense, asserting that the relationship stemmed from mutual affection rather than transactional purposes, the court rejected her claims and imposed a 2 million won fine. Concurrently, four other individuals implicated in the same case entered guilty pleas.
Subsequent to the court’s decisive ruling, G.Na retreated entirely from the entertainment industry, choosing to live a private life primarily in Canada, far from the public spotlight that once defined her.
Breaking her prolonged silence, G.Na made a heartfelt return to social media last September. In a poignant post, she reflected on her years away from the industry, stating, “What hurt most wasn’t what happened … it was the silence. I disappeared not to hide, but to survive.”
This powerful message was accompanied by an unequivocal declaration of her determination to reclaim her narrative: “But I’m not the scared girl anymore. I’m no longer defined by the past, but by what I choose to do now.”
