K-pop Reunion Surge: Nostalgia’s Market Power

A burgeoning trend is sweeping the K-pop industry as numerous iconic groups from yesteryear are reuniting, often years after their official disbandment. This resurgence is largely driven by a growing market of dedicated older fans, creating significant demand for nostalgia-fueled projects and comebacks.

Recently, groups like I.O.I, Secret, and SeeYa have successfully launched reunion activities, showcasing a pattern that industry insiders attribute to long-time fans. These enthusiasts, who followed the artists during their teenage years, now wield substantial purchasing power as adults, eagerly supporting their beloved idols’ returns.

Among the most anticipated comebacks is Secret’s, which unveiled their special EP, “Secret Flavor,” on June 18. This release marked the group’s first full-member return in an impressive 12 years, captivating their fanbase.

The Secret reunion garnered particular attention due to the recruitment of talented vocalist Yebin, who participated in the project in place of former members Han Sun-hwa and Song Ji-eun.

Initially, some fans expressed reservations about whether a new member could seamlessly match the vocal prowess of the original lineup. However, these concerns largely dissipated by June 12, following the release of a compelling live performance video of “Madonna,” one of the group’s most enduring hit songs.

Furthermore, vocal trio SeeYa is also preparing a highly anticipated reunion to commemorate their 20th anniversary, nearly 15 years after their 2011 disbandment. To facilitate this special event, the bandmates took the unique step of establishing their own company and have since made multiple appearances on television programs and university festival stages to promote their grand return.

Following the release of “First, Again,” their first album in 15 years, SeeYa is set to embark on an extensive five-city national concert tour titled “The Fan” in August, further exciting their dedicated audience.

The current widespread attention surrounding K-pop reunion projects has been significantly amplified by the undeniable commercial success of I.O.I’s recent return to the music scene.

I.O.I’s third EP, “I.O.I: Loop,” has maintained an exceptional performance on domestic music charts, with its lead track “Suddenly” soaring to the top of Melon’s Top 100 chart and consistently ranking among the platform’s most-streamed songs in recent weeks.

This powerful reunion trend has also expanded beyond traditional music releases and concert tours. Project boy band Wanna One, for instance, reunited in April for the first time since their disbandment in January 2019, making their comeback through the Mnet reality series “Wanna One Go: Back to Base.” While the group has yet to announce new music or reunion concerts, their return powerfully demonstrates the enduring commercial appeal of nostalgia-driven projects among the vast K-pop fanbase.

This current wave of K-pop reunions aligns with a recurring pattern observed throughout the vibrant history of Korean pop music.

In December 2024, first-generation girl group Baby V.O.X captivated audiences by reuniting for a special performance at KBS’ year-end music show, the “KBS Song Festival.” This drew widespread attention from their longtime fans, with a performance video uploaded to KBS Kpop’s YouTube channel impressively surpassing 12 million views.

A decade prior, legendary group g.o.d played a pivotal role in establishing the blueprint for successful idol group reunions. They were among the first major K-pop acts to effectively resume activities after disbandment. Their triumphant return paved the way for subsequent reunions from other iconic groups like Sechs Kies, S.E.S., and H.O.T.

Industry officials emphasize that the escalating popularity of these reunions directly reflects the robust rise of nostalgia-driven consumption trends within the entertainment landscape.

“The market for nostalgia has significantly expanded as K-pop’s rich history has grown over time,” an industry official, who chose to remain anonymous, shared with The Korea Herald.

“We are increasingly witnessing older songs re-entering music charts, and retro sounds are regaining immense popularity through contemporary new releases. Consequently, veteran artists are no longer perceived as outdated by younger audiences, and reunions are now viewed more as a natural progression rather than an exceptional, rare occurrence.”

The official further elaborated that the surging popularity of K-pop reunions also mirrors “a broader demographic evolution within K-pop’s audience. What was once seen primarily as a youth-driven industry now actively includes a wider range of audiences, particularly those in their 30s and 40s.”

“We are observing K-pop evolve into a dynamic form of popular culture that profoundly resonates across various stages of life, which intrinsically makes reunions even more impactful and successful,” they concluded.
