SK hynix Briefly Overtakes Samsung Electronics as Korea’s Most Valuable Company Amid AI Boom

In a historic market event, semiconductor giant SK hynix briefly surpassed Samsung Electronics on Monday, claiming the title of South Korea’s most valuable listed company during intraday trading. This landmark achievement marks the first time in nearly 26 years that Samsung’s long-standing dominance in the Korean stock market has been challenged, fueled by the surging demand for artificial intelligence (AI) technologies.

A Historic Shift in South Korea’s Stock Market Dominance

During Monday’s trading session, SK hynix shares surged by as much as 6.5 percent, reaching an unprecedented 2.95 million won (approximately $1,900). This remarkable rise propelled its market capitalization to 208.1 trillion won, briefly exceeding Samsung Electronics’ market value of 207.3 trillion won by an impressive 8.6 trillion won at its peak. While SK hynix maintained a strong position, trading at 2.92 million won (up 5.5 percent) by 1 p.m., Samsung Electronics also saw a modest gain of 0.4 percent, reaching 355,250 won.

Samsung Electronics has historically been the dominant force in the South Korean equity market, first attaining the status of Korea’s most valuable listed company in July 1999. It has steadfastly maintained this leading position since November 2000, following its acquisition of the top spot from Korea Telecom, now known as KT Corp.

Fueling the Future: SK hynix’s AI Advantage

This significant shift in market leadership underscores investors’ heightened preference for companies directly benefiting from the global artificial intelligence (AI) boom. SK hynix, a pivotal player in the semiconductor industry, is recognized as the leading supplier of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) chips—essential components for Nvidia’s cutting-edge AI accelerators. Consequently, SK hynix has rapidly emerged as one of the stock market’s most prominent winners in the AI era.

The outstanding performance of SK hynix stock this year further illustrates its market momentum, with shares soaring an impressive 341.9 percent. In comparison, industry rival Samsung Electronics recorded a substantial, yet lesser, gain of 197.7 percent over the same period.

Paving the Way for Global Growth: Potential US ADR Listing

Further bolstering investor confidence in SK hynix is the anticipation of a potential US American Depositary Receipt (ADR) listing. Financial analysts suggest that a debut on the Nasdaq exchange could significantly broaden the company’s investor base, while also helping to narrow the current valuation gap when compared to its global semiconductor counterparts, such as Micron Technology.

Leading industry experts, including Hanwha Investment & Securities analyst Park Jun-young, have expressed strong optimism for SK hynix’s future. Park recently elevated his target price for the chipmaker to 4.3 million won, attributing this to enhanced earnings visibility and SK hynix’s commanding leadership in the global memory market.

Park further elaborated that South Korean memory chip manufacturers are starting to overcome their historical valuation discount. This positive shift is driven by the establishment of long-term supply agreements and an exponential surge in demand for high-bandwidth memory (HBM) solutions, which collectively improve long-term earnings visibility and stability.

According to Park, an ADR listing presents a strategic opportunity for SK hynix to achieve a valuation commensurate with its leading peers in the robust US market. He emphasized that the company’s significant technological advancements and compelling valuation appeal could position a US listing as yet another powerful catalyst, driving a further re-rating of the stock’s intrinsic value.
