The Eyes Review: Classical Obsession and Fading Vision

By Lee Minji

Prepare for an intense psychological journey with “The Eyes,” a gripping mystery thriller starring Shin Min-a. This much-anticipated film delves into the lives of artistic twins, Seo-jin and Seo-in, both portrayed by the versatile Shin Min-a, as they confront a devastating degenerative eye disease running through their family. “The Eyes” promises a captivating narrative exploring familial bonds, artistic ambition, and the chilling descent into a murder mystery.

The younger twin, Seo-in, finds unexpected artistic inspiration in her early loss of sight, carving out a successful career as a ceramicist. Embracing her unique perspective, she steadfastly rejects Seo-jin’s offers for sight-restoring surgery, viewing her condition as a muse rather than a disability.

In stark contrast, Seo-jin, a pragmatic photographer, grapples with a maelstrom of emotions. As Seo-in’s star rises, Seo-jin is plagued by envy, frustration over her sister’s refusal of treatment, and a profound guilt for harboring such conflicted feelings while faithfully caring for her sibling.

The sisters’ diverging paths lead to an estrangement, until a tragic discovery: Seo-jin finds Seo-in dead in her secluded rural townhouse. Refusing to accept the police’s verdict of suicide, Seo-jin embarks on a relentless quest to uncover the truth behind her sister’s mysterious death.

Simultaneously, Seo-jin finds herself a target, relentlessly pursued by Hyun-min (Lee Seung-ryong), a former model who continues to stalk her despite a restraining order. Her investigation intensifies as she joins forces with Do-hyeok (Kim Nam-hee), a local detective, navigating the dark secrets of the countryside while her own vision steadily deteriorates, mirroring her sister’s fate.

“The Eyes” skillfully introduces a gallery of unsettling characters, each entwined with Seo-in’s life in the rural community. These uncanny individuals gradually pull back the veil, revealing a disturbing presence that had long lurked around the twins, deepening the film’s psychological suspense.

Director Yeom Ji-ho masterfully shifts the film’s atmosphere from a modern crime thriller set in Seoul, exploring the fear of a stalker, to a classic murder mystery when the narrative moves to Seo-in’s tranquil yet eerie rural town. The quiet, deep-colored nights and Seo-in’s melancholic wardrobe evoke a timeless suspense thriller ambiance, enhanced by deliberate homages to legendary directors like Stanley Kubrick and Alfred Hitchcock.

While these classical cinematic touches lend a rich, theatrical quality to the film, they also contribute to a unique mood that some viewers might find distinct as the story reaches its climax. Crucially, for a movie centered on the terrifying prospect of vision loss, “The Eyes” employs clever visual techniques, including blurring, to immerse audiences in Seo-jin’s deteriorating perspective, heightening the tension and unease.

Shin Min-a, known for her roles in romantic comedies and heartwarming dramas, delivers a powerfully nuanced performance. She deftly portrays the subtle differences and shared fears of the twin sisters, anchoring this complex psychological thriller with her compelling portrayal.

“The Eyes” is a compelling Korean remake of the acclaimed 2010 Spanish psychological thriller “Julia’s Eyes.” Don’t miss this suspenseful cinematic experience, set for release this Wednesday.
