LG Display announced Monday that its extensive range of large OLED panels, designed for both TVs and monitors, has achieved groundbreaking Intertek certification for superior color and brightness accuracy under diverse everyday lighting conditions. This marks a significant world-first recognition for OLED display products.

This prestigious certification, officially known as “Perfect Color and Brightness Accuracy up to 500 lux,” critically evaluates how faithfully a display reproduces the intended color and brightness by content creators within a typical viewing environment. It sets a new benchmark for display quality.

Unlike conventional picture-quality assessments that often concentrate on isolated technical specifications like color gamut or peak brightness, this innovative evaluation rigorously assesses the precise reproduction of images when content is viewed under real-life, ambient lighting scenarios.

Intertek conducted comprehensive testing on both OLED and LCD panels, utilizing a series of intricate test patterns and meticulously measuring changes in color and brightness across various selected points on the screen.

The results highlighted LG Display’s OLED panels achieving an outstanding 100 percent score in both color accuracy and brightness accuracy. Furthermore, these cutting-edge panels demonstrated remarkable color-crosstalk-free performance, ensuring that colors remain unaffected by interference from adjacent screen areas.

LG Display emphasized that these impressive outcomes conclusively prove its OLED panels’ capability to consistently maintain exceptional color and brightness accuracy across a wide array of content types and varying viewing conditions, moving beyond mere theoretical performance in isolated specification tests.

The leading panel manufacturer attributes this superior performance to OLED’s unique self-emissive structure. In stark contrast to LCD panels, which rely on external backlights, OLED panels feature pixels that emit light independently, granting precise brightness control at the individual pixel level for unparalleled accuracy.

Conversely, when subjected to the identical stringent criteria, LCD panels exhibited notable limitations in both brightness and color accuracy. LG Display explained this is primarily due to light from their backlights spilling into adjacent areas. The company also observed that even some premium LCD models displayed color crosstalk, where object colors appeared distinctly different depending on the background color.

This pioneering certification emerges at a crucial time as panel makers increasingly look beyond just peak brightness and resolution to differentiate premium displays. The emphasis on image accuracy under everyday viewing conditions is rapidly gaining prominence as a key metric for discerning consumers.

“This certification unequivocally demonstrates that OLED technology can accurately reproduce the critical color and brightness values that consumers prioritize, precisely as content creators intended,” stated Lee Hyeon-woo, head of LG Display’s large display business unit. “We are committed to continuously highlighting the premium picture quality inherent to OLED and further solidifying our market leadership in advanced display technologies.”
