Hyundai Rotem Secures Landmark Electric Train Maintenance Contract in Morocco
Hyundai Rotem, a global leader in railway system manufacturing, has significantly strengthened its partnership with Morocco’s national railway operator, ONCF, by signing a groundbreaking agreement for electric train maintenance services. The historic deal, inked on Thursday in Rabat, Morocco, marks a major step forward for the North African nation’s public transportation infrastructure.
The signing ceremony was attended by key figures, including Hyundai Rotem CEO Lee Yong-bae and ONCF Director General Mohamed Rabie Khlie, underscoring the strategic importance of this collaboration for both entities.
Expanding Morocco’s Railway Network Ahead of FIFA World Cup 2030
This latest agreement builds upon a substantial 2 trillion won (approximately $1.3 billion USD) electric train supply project that Hyundai Rotem secured from ONCF in February. These advanced electric trains are vital for enhancing connectivity across Morocco, particularly linking key urban centers like Casablanca, in preparation for the 2030 FIFA World Cup. Morocco is proudly co-hosting the prestigious tournament, making efficient and modern rail transport a critical component of its readiness.
Following the initial supply contract, this maintenance agreement finalizes essential details concerning vehicle upkeep, equipment management, and comprehensive technical support services for the electric train fleet.
Record-Breaking Railway Maintenance Deal Valued at 748.2 Billion Won
Valued at an impressive 748.2 billion won, this contract stands as Hyundai Rotem’s largest-ever overseas railway maintenance agreement. It encompasses the comprehensive maintenance of all 440 train cars supplied under the initial contract, with services to be provided over the next 20 years through a dedicated joint venture between Hyundai Rotem and ONCF.
Hyundai Rotem’s responsibilities under the agreement include supplying all necessary spare parts for train maintenance, operating a responsive help desk, and providing extensive heavy maintenance for the railways. Heavy maintenance involves critical processes such as meticulous test operations, precise repairs, and timely component replacements, all designed to ensure the enduring operational safety and efficiency of Morocco’s electric train system.
Fostering Local Industry and Bilateral Growth
Beyond the operational aspects, Hyundai Rotem is committed to sourcing the required spare parts from over 200 domestic small and medium-sized partner companies. This strategic initiative aims to foster mutual development between the Korean and Moroccan railway industries, stimulating local economies and creating valuable opportunities within Morocco’s industrial sector.
“We are dedicated to ensuring this contract significantly contributes to the advancement of Morocco’s local railway industry and the enhancement of its public transportation infrastructure,” stated an official from Hyundai Rotem. “Our focus remains on the successful delivery of these trains to Morocco and ensuring seamless post-delivery maintenance operations, guaranteeing reliable and safe service for years to come.”
