Popular South Korean YouTuber Kwak Tube has found himself inadvertently caught in the midst of a major cryptocurrency controversy, suffering collateral damage after a Hong Kong-based crypto project founder controversially changed his social media profile picture to an image of the well-known content creator.
This widespread confusion stems from a recent hack that targeted Humanity Protocol, a blockchain-based cryptocurrency project. The project’s native token recently experienced a dramatic collapse, losing over 80 percent of its market value and resulting in significant financial losses for investors.
Amidst escalating online criticism and investor outrage, Humanity Protocol founder Terrence Kwok made the contentious decision to replace his profile photo with a picture of Kwak Tube, whose real name is Kwak Jun-bin. This unexpected profile picture change instantly caused widespread confusion, leading many online users to mistakenly link the prominent South Korean YouTuber to the unfolding crypto scandal. Despite the English spelling difference between ‘Kwok’ and ‘Kwak,’ both surnames share an identical pronunciation in Korean, exacerbating the potential for misunderstanding.

Kwak Tube swiftly addressed the developing situation and the false associations on Wednesday, taking to Instagram to unequivocally deny any and all involvement with the Humanity Protocol project or any crypto-related ventures.
In a direct statement posted in English, he clarified: “I’m a YouTuber from Korea. I’ve never even touched crypto. He stole my picture,” clearly distancing himself from the cryptocurrency debacle.
He further expressed his disbelief, adding, “Of all people, it had to be a Kwak,” highlighting the unfortunate coincidence of their shared Korean surname amidst the controversy.
Terrence Kwok, the central figure in this controversy, is a notable Hong Kong entrepreneur recognized for founding Tink Labs, a technology startup that had previously achieved coveted unicorn status.
