CJ CheilJedang Pioneers Sustainable Land-Based Seaweed Farming with New Facility
CJ CheilJedang announced plans on Monday to commence construction in August for a commercial-scale land-based seaweed farming facility in Cheonan, South Chungcheong Province. This significant investment underscores the company’s commitment to innovation in sustainable food production.
The state-of-the-art facility, slated for completion in the first half of next year, will feature multiple cultivation tanks and advanced production systems. The seaweed cultivated here will be integrated into CJ CheilJedang’s popular Bibigo seaweed products. This project is set to accelerate the commercialization of the company’s cutting-edge land-based seaweed cultivation technology, while also fostering valuable collaboration with local governments and fishing communities.
Revolutionizing Seaweed Production with Advanced Technology
CJ CheilJedang aims to significantly scale up its seaweed production using proprietary technologies that encompass the entire seaweed life cycle, unique culture media, and integrated quality-control systems. This innovative approach allows for consistent, year-round production of high-quality seaweed, effectively overcoming the seasonal limitations traditionally associated with conventional ocean farming methods.
Since 2018, CJ CheilJedang has been at the forefront of developing land-based seaweed cultivation technology, marking its position as the first food company in Korea to venture into this field. Through rigorous research and development milestones, including successful cultivation in 3-ton tanks and the creation of proprietary seaweed varieties, the company has advanced to the commercialization stage.
Patented Varieties Ensure Superior Quality and Efficiency
Earlier this year, CJ CheilJedang secured a patent registration for a new seaweed variety specifically optimized for land-based cultivation. This specialized variety boasts higher productivity, enhanced efficiency, and greater temperature adaptability compared to traditional ocean-farmed strains. Crucially, it enables full control over the cultivation and quality management processes within a land-based environment.
Adam Ricciardone, Chief Technology Officer of CJ CheilJedang’s research and development, highlighted the facility’s importance: “This facility will serve as a crucial testing ground for applying over a decade of accumulated land-based cultivation technology to industrial-scale production.”
He added, “We are committed to accelerating our commercialization efforts to ensure that consumers worldwide can enjoy fresh and flavorful Bibigo seaweed products throughout the entire year.” This initiative reinforces CJ CheilJedang’s dedication to delivering premium, sustainable food options globally.
