K-pop project groups I.O.I and Wanna One have reunited after 9 and 7 years, respectively. These highly anticipated comebacks are not merely nostalgic events; they are drawing in new fans and proving to be significant success factors in the current music industry.

For years, fans consistently demanded the reunion of I.O.I and Wanna One, groups that captivated South Korea a decade ago. This unwavering interest led to the members gathering once again, bringing the project group reunions to fruition. These comebacks not only evoke a strong sense of nostalgia among existing fans but also successfully attract the attention of a new generation of K-pop enthusiasts. Despite their relatively short initial activity periods, both groups built explosive buzz and strong fanbases, demonstrating their enduring influence as even news of members’ current activities or broadcast appearances generates immense public interest.

I.O.I, in particular, proved their immense power with their 3rd mini-album, ‘I.O.I : LOOP,’ released to commemorate their 10th anniversary. The title track, ‘Suddenly,’ soared to No. 1 on both Melon’s ‘Top 100’ and ‘HOT 100’ charts on the 29th, showcasing their undiminished popularity.

I.O.I, comprising Jeon Somi, Kim Sejeong, Choi Yoojung, Chungha, Kim Sohye, Zhou Jieqiong, Jung Chaeyeon, Kim Doyeon, Kang Mina, Lim Nayoung, and Yoo Yeonjung, debuted in 2016 through Mnet’s ‘Produce 101’ Season 1. They garnered immense love with hit songs like ‘Very Very Very’ and ‘Dream Girls.’ Although Zhou Jieqiong and Kang Mina were unable to participate in this reunion activity, the group’s unwavering presence, even after a long hiatus since their initial activities concluded, received enthusiastic responses from listeners.

This resurgence of interest also extended to social media. A ‘Suddenly’ dance challenge, featuring participation from various artists and celebrities such as Melomance’s Kim Minseok, SEVENTEEN’s Mingyu, TWICE’s Sana and Jihyo, Bae Yoonjeong, Kahi, and Twitch streamer Chimchakman, gained immense popularity and drove significant buzz.

Most notably, I.O.I’s chart-topping achievement on the 29th, the first day of their solo concert ‘2026 I.O.I Concert Tour: LOOP’ held at Jamsil Indoor Stadium in Seoul, added even greater significance to their comeback. The members expressed their overwhelming emotion, exclaiming, “Even a drama would get criticized for writing a plot this perfect.”

Wanna One also demonstrated their continued immense popularity through their own reunion project. They officially kicked off their activities on the 6th with ‘WANNA ONE GO : Back to Base.’

Wanna One, consisting of Kang Daniel, Park Jihoon, Lee Daehwi, Kim Jaehwan, Ong Seongwu, Park Woojin, Lai Kuanlin, Yoon Jisung, Bae Jinyoung, and Ha Sungwoon, debuted through ‘Produce 101 Season 2.’ They achieved syndromic popularity with consecutive hit songs like ‘Energetic,’ ‘Beautiful,’ ‘Boomerang,’ and ‘I.P.U.’ Despite their brief activity period, they left a powerful impact, leading to persistent fan anticipation for their reunion.

Amidst such high expectations, Wanna One, reuniting after seven years, reconnected with fans through ‘WANNA ONE GO : Back to Base,’ a fresh reinterpretation of their past reality program ‘Wanna One Go.’ The project showcased the members’ unchanging chemistry, further enhanced by the meaningful participation of Kang Daniel, currently serving in the military, through narration, and Lai Kuanlin, who retired from the entertainment industry, through a special appearance. The related videos released on Mnet Plus’s official SNS channels garnered explosive reactions, surpassing 100 million cumulative views.

The widespread interest in their reunion project also translated into musical success. Wanna One subsequently released special singles ‘WE WANNA GO’ and ‘Spring Breeze Again,’ once again delivering their signature group sensibility. These new songs immediately resonated with fans, evoking cherished memories, while also imprinting Wanna One’s unique team color on new fans, proving the powerful effect of their reunion.

As demonstrated by I.O.I and Wanna One, these K-pop reunions are not just about recalling memories but are leading to tangible achievements. By tapping into existing fans’ nostalgia and simultaneously attracting new fans, both groups have generated significant buzz across various platforms, including music charts, content creation, and concerts. Furthermore, it is widely acknowledged that the synergy created by members who have solidified their positions in individual careers, reuniting as a group, has surpassed their past collective impact.

In the rapidly evolving K-pop market, where generational shifts are constant, these reunions are gaining attention as a potent success factor that satisfies both ‘nostalgia’ and ‘novelty.’ They offer long-time fans a cherished moment of reunion while providing new fans with fresh content, thus building a cross-generational connection. The achievements showcased by I.O.I and Wanna One unequivocally prove that their brand power remains incredibly strong and relevant.
